What was the problem last year defensively with running quarterbacks?

Watching this Netflix SEC show brought back horrendous memories.
Every single team that trotted a running quarterback out there, we looked completely lost and incapable of stopping him. And it looked like we had 0 answers.
I understand that we sucked athletically on defense last year. But we blew assignment after assignment as well defending those guys. And some of that falls on Baker’s head.
Hopefully Baker has figured that out, because watching Milroe put up 250+ on us on the ground in that complete arse beating while we’re looking completely fricking lost was one of the most miserable experiences in my many times in Tiger Stadium.

Culture was cancerous. No one willing to make initial violent contact.

When OL are winning 1 on 1 vs your DL other OL are getting to your LB, and they’re winning. And some sloppy gap assignments.

I did notice that as well. When’s the last time we made a stadium go “ooooh” because we hit the shite out of someone?

This and that your last line of defense, the safeties, being dreadful at tackling in space.

There were a lot of business decisions made by our safeties. Sage, Burns (loudmouth mf to suck) and Gilbert were atrocious at tackling.
Hopefully Gilbert doesn’t get too much PT.

Not only were Sage and Burns not good at tackling, they were terrible in technique and assignments.
It’s going to be fun watching Sage get cooked by Nuss on Sept. 27th

Safeties were soft as baby shite and bad at football

Gilbert had an injured shoulder, it was obvious he was avoiding contact, as he didn't in the bowl game and it looked much different.
The question is why was he playing injured?

if they play him its because they feel he was just bad at tackling because of his injury and we need a big safety for run support.
because he can't cover worth a shite and that wasnt because of a bad shoulder.
we have options now,if he plays its because hes gotten much better. we have the depth to not be forced to play someone now

I watched and rewatched many of the big running plays made by quarterbacks. These were designed runs, not scrambles from the pocket to avoid a sack, and I was shocked by how bad our safeties were at play recognition. They would come up and fill a gap and the QB would run through another gap 10 ft away. They seemed to always guess wrong. No football instinct whatsoever. This has to change or we will be in the same position again this year.

This combined with the horrible angles by the safties.

Running quarterbacks are a problem for every defense, especially now that OCs game plan to disguise when and where the QB will exploit a gap.
We didn’t have enough pressure up the middle or good enough pass coverage to effectively force the QB to make a choice to run where we wanted them to.
Instead, the play was being forced by the offense and we were not quite able to react. It’s easy to find yourself out of position if the opposing offense has options.

I've said it several times but people truly don't realize how much losing guillory last year effected the defense. He was the only SEC ready DT . Stopping runs up the middle required significant help from LBs and safeties. Teams with SEC Offensive lines and qbs who were running threats were primed to take advantage of this weakness. Running qbs created too many options for our defense to account for they would get us to bite on various rpo looks stretch us sideline and beat our defensive line up the middle when we tried to make adjustments.
On paper this weakness seems to be completely mitigated this season with players who have had a season to get experience and an off-season to get their bodies where they need to be as well as getting in some transfers.

More to do with not the talent level we should have at LSU. I think that's been addressed finally.

Why’d I get downvoted saying Matt House? The damage he did was unfathomable and spilled over to the next year.
Baker is a fantastic DC but you can’t make gold out of shite
