Could someone with knowledge explain what exactly the star position entails?

As of late, the star position is becoming more and more common in modern defenses. But what exactly does this position entail? How will be more beneficial to LSU and Perkins for this role? I get that it is a position that roams the field.. but is this going to require Perkins to drop back in coverage like we’ve seen do in the past? (which is what we come to agree that he doesn’t need to do)
Just wanted more insight on this to get a better under standing of his role.

The star position, also known as the "Will" linebacker, is a hybrid linebacker-defensive back role. Formation: In a 4-3 defense, the star position replaces one of the traditional linebackers, creating a 3-3-5 formation (three linemen, three linebackers, five defensive backs).

Really just a silly name for an WSOLB. Same alignment and responsibilities just not necessarily using a true LB for the position.

It's almost just a box safety, which is essentially a guy with safety skills playing LB. Supposed to play around the LOS and move all around the field and have several different responsibilities/freedoms. If you go back and watch Major Burns last year, that's the STAR - just no where close to as good as HP7 will play the position in 2025.

It's essentially a LB, S, and Nickel rolled all into one, that could be asked to perform any of those rolls at any given time. For example, while Major Burns played star last year, and Harold Perkins is playing it this year, I don't think Perk will be asked to do what Burns was asked to do, to a t. They'll mix it up a bit to better take advantage of Perk as a player.

Big nickel, off ball LB basically

I don't think we've all agreed on that. We all agree he's not a MLB or a run stuffer. He gets lost in the run game and has trouble shedding blocks inside. But he's been good in coverage and good rushing the passer from the outside

LB Rover,,,moves around to strong side or he can let his instincts define what he does. This is perfect for Perkins. He will be all over the field like he was when he was a Freshman. Perkins and Weeks will be an awesome pair for this defense. I think our defense will be very good this year.

Star is really for that hybrid player (like Perkins) who plays part linebacker, part defensive back usually covering slot receivers. The star plays in space, blitzes sometimes, covers tight ends or receivers, and stops the run. Perk is going to feast in this position he’s the kind of player that’ll keep offensive coordinators up at night trying to figure out how to game plan around him.

It’s a Drop Linebacker from Tep’s best-selling novel.

Honey Badger played that role, as well as anyone could possibly play it, in 2011.
If you go back and watch Honey Badger highlights he was lined up all over the place in 2011. Made unbelievable plays from anywhere, and everywhere, they lined him up.

there is a flip side to this...he can come from anywhere and still spy a running qb. Some of yall think he should be rushing the passer every play but I am going to trust coaches when it comes to putting a player in position to make the most plays. If we lined him up on the weak side everytime don't you think the opposing OC would have an easier time game planning for him?

yep, football is not a complex or complicated sport, but they’re always conjuring up new terms for old ones trying to make it sound like this is a dynamic, highly technical sport

Saying he’s lined up on the weak side is just a standard description of where the position is against a basic right handed formation. He can move around according to the situation.

they don’t play the same roll either
it’s probably closer to a box safety than a Will

I was only using that as an example. he can lineup anywhere

I remember 20+ years ago when Beamer had the same thing in his defense and called it another stupid name. Chavis used alot of tiny WSOLBs but he never changed their designation. It’s whatever not a big deal just kinda silly imo.

“Box safety” isn’t a position

If you are in a 4-3 defense and lose a LB, wouldn’t you then be in a 4-2-5?

Think Jacoby Steven's.
Wasn't a great LB, wasn't a great S, but right in between those positions is the hot spot.
