Just you? Or your family? I personally loved Volcano NP but it doesn't seem to get a lot of love.

Volcanoes national park was awesome. There are some cool waterfalls not to far from Hilo. Go to Richardson Ocean Park for swimming

Volcanoes National Park and drive over to Kona one night to swim with the manta rays.
Bring a flashlight and go check out Kaumana Caves in the morning before everyone from the other side of the island makes it over and it gets crowded.

Check out Banyan Drive and neighboring park. Akaka Falls and the falls in Hilo are worth the visit. If you like plants, visit the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. My favorite Big Island restaurant is Pineapples in downtown Hilo. Great lunch plate places in Hilo too. Ola Brew has a taproom there. I’ve only been to their Kona location, but the beer is great.

What kind of work in Hilo? I graduated from UH Hilo.
To add to what folks said, the Waipio Valley lookout is north of town. If you can do saddle road at night to go do the Mauna Kea visitor center I would add that too

Do a lava tube cave tour. There's a small tube inside the national park, but it doesn't compare to what you can get on a tour outside.
I did this one, but there are two others that people also give great reviews to.
I also like the 1920s vibe of Honokaa. You can consider a tour of the Waipio Valley (read about the controversy).

Prioritize Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, 40 minutes away, active volcanoes and steam vents, totally worth it. Also, check out Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls for quick nature hits. The Hilo Farmers Market is great for local food and souvenirs. If you have time, Panaewa Rainforest Zoo is free and cool.
