I've built a small 4x8 camper and in a few weeks will start some +/- 3 day trips, every other week, just me and my dog. The camper has solar/batter/generator/fans and a/c, but is primarily a "basecamp" for hiking. I don't need hookups, so fairly primitive areas are open.

Looking for camp/hike suggestions around 6 hours/350 mile range of Baton Rouge, but will range further later. Next year possibly Montana, Dakotas or Utah.

Thanks in advance!

Cherokee Rock Village is the first place I would go.

Camp Claiborne

Kisatchie- Backbone, Azaela, or Sandstone trail. There’s quite a few in Kisatchie, but those are the only three that I remember off hand.

Clayton, Ga

Great little mountain town just off the AT. Cool breweries, distilleries, wineries, vibrant main street, drive in movie "theater", rafting, golf, eclectic dining options.

Tishomingo State Park in Mississippi. You'll think you are in the Appalachians.

I'll post some pics later this week. Installing the door and A/C on the next couple days. Will be 99.9% then!

I did a 50 mile canoe trip recently on the Buffalo, from Ponca to Woolum. Stunning area.

I have that book.

I camped/backpacked in Kisatchie last fall. I'll check out Camp Claiborne and Sam Houston Jones state park. Thanks.

I'll have to check out Clayton. I'm doing a through-hike on the AT starting this March.

Most of the bugs I hope to work out in my driveway!

I forgot about Clear Springs Campground. I looked into it a while back after it was suggested by a friend.

I've never considered Tishomingo State Park. Just looked it up... How have I not seen this place!

Good suggestion! I've backpacked the Cheaha loop several times. A similar loop in Arkansas is Eagle Rock Loop.

Texas Hill Country. Plenty of parks with modern or primitive campsites between Austin, San Antonio and Kerrville. Some of my favorites:
Pedernales falls, Garner, Colorado Bend, Lost Maples (Fall), Enchanted Rock, Blanco, Guadalupe River, etc.

FYI, Clear Springs is first come, first served. It's not a problem most of the year, but can get a bit crowded at the beginning of hunting season.

Check out the Ozark Highlands Trail if you want a thru hike warmup for the AT.

As others have said, the Buffalo Wilderness area is pretty spectacular with exceptional hiking opportunities. Buffalo River Trailis great for the Fall, but it does have a lot of wet crossings. Lots of other shorter hikes that aren't point to point as well can be found here..

Spent 30 yr in Utah, been all over the desert canyons and alone areas, can suggest less well-traveled areas when you're ready to do that way. Also number of places in Wind Rivers, Montana Beartooths, and all over Colorado.
