What’s the deal with optometrists?

Just went to the optometrist, and I always marvel at how this profession continues to exist despite the apparent simplicity of the work. How are these guys making 6 figures to ask “which one’s better — 1 or 2”? Are there regulations in place keeping this profession alive?
Anyone have an amazing story of optometric heroism to share?

My ophthalmologist is in a practice with a dozen MDs and a half dozen optometrists. If you need your prescription checked, an optometrist can do that just fine.

I guess the most important part of their job is recognizing conditions in the eye that require the attention of a specialist

I agree.
Seems like we can replace them with a kiosk.

Determinations that are made from data their assistants obtain from those new machines?

My ophthalmologist jumped my arse for seeing an optometrist. I have a bunch of stuff - Thyroid Eye Disease, Pseudotumor Cerebri, a meningioma by my optic nerve and pituitary gland, borderline glaucoma so the lecture was well deserved.

Colorblind and retarded is no way to go through life, son.

Just colorblind, not retarded

He'll probably refer you to an optometrist in his practice. Opthalmologists primarily handle surgeries and diseases of the eye. They hand off the routine stuff to optometrists.

The guy that invented Lasik surgery and some engineers/ doctors are marketing a machine that will do all that "1 or 2. 2 or 3..." And spit out a prescription.
