Neither QB may work and that's ok

If tweet fails to load, click here. So many people wanted a rebuild and we may be there. Neither Rattler or Shough may work, but that's not necessarily a make-or-break thing.
Shough's cap hit for the next 4 years averages $3 Million per the above tweet. I don't know Rattler's contract, but it is much lower. If these guys don't pan out, it's not going to hurt our cap like a veteran (Carr) flopping. They could be bad and we would be bad. But that helps our draft position in a good QB draft next year, and the lack of QB production, while hurting the football, does not hurt the accounting.
If they suck, so be it, but at least they are sucking cheaply at the most expensive position. Especially if their real target, whoever that may be, is in the 2026 draft class.

In the NFL, you either have a QB or you are looking for one. I am fine spending this season determining if Shough or Rattler are viable. If not, you go get another one next season. Repeat until you find one.

Yea I’m fine with the numbers, but I would never take a qb in round 2 again after this contract. Either the talent is first round level or wait until 3 or after.

This.
Personally, I don't think Shough will make much impact, if any. I just don't see how a guy who's best performance in SEVEN years of college football was being the 5th-6th best QB in the ACC is going to be a good NFL QB. But, it was a weak QB draft and the Saints weren't at a spot to pick high enough to draft one of the top 1-2 guys. Best case scenario Shough defies the odds and become a solid QB. Second best case scenario, Rattler uses the competition to become better and becomes a good QB. Worst case scenario, neither are any good and you get trying to find the next guy. But that is FAR better than overpaying a mid-level QB just to have decent, but not great team success.

Exactly. You take chances based on your situation each year (draft position; available FAs) until you find your guy. The doomposters will bitch cry over all of this, but they are irrelevant

I’d rather be in the Saints position right now then IN say Miami or Chicago both those organizations thought they had a camp miss QB in the first round and as it looks right now, both the first round bust in my opinion

I agree. We are buying cap in the future by not paying for a QB now. It’s essential.
Having said that the only question was using the draft pick on Shough with so many holes on the roster.

Most 1st rd QBs are, as are most 2nd, 3rd, etc. It's always a crap shoot; it's just some prospects have a lesser percent chance at being a miss. That's all it is. No pick is a sure thing, and saying he was 5 years later is simply hindsight gambling.
We can be picking 1st overall next year, selecting Arch Manning and still have a good chance at him being a bust. That's the nature of the game.

I don’t think Caleb Williams is going to be a bust. I’d take him right now without asking twice.

This was my biggest gripe. That and I didn’t think Shough shoujd have been drafted before the 4th round.
There was first round talent still on the board at 40….
I’d rather build up the roster more then try and get our qb of the future. Throwing rookie qbs on a bad roster is a receipe for disaster.

If their real target is a QB in the 2026 draft, then anyone involved in making that decision should be fired. If you are looking to just get by this season, so you can get your QB of the future; don't wasn't a top 40 pick on someone that you will have no use for other than as a back-up for a few years. For $2M on a 1-year deal, you could have gone out and picked up someone on like Trey Lance, Minshew, Kennam, Josh Johnson, etc. for a legit chance to start and still used the 40th pick on someone that could have a chance to make a difference on the field.
Now, if they though Shough has the tools and ability to be an above average starter or better, then the only question I have is why not move up to the bottom of the 1st and get that 5th year option. I'll see if I can find the video, but I saw a clip from McShay reviewing our picks and he was saying in the right spot we may look back in 2-3 years and Shough may be considered the best or 2nd best QB in this group. Can Moore be that right fit, will he get 2-3 years

Buttercup ?
That’s what you call your Boyfriends ?
I’ll just call you both “Pillow-Biters”

Look at the situation this way …..
Saints tried to draft the Ole Miss QB ( Dart) in the 1st rd of the draft but the price was too high to trade back-into the 1st round after drafting Kelvin Banks at #9. The Giants traded back into the rd and drafted Dart instead of Saints.
After missing on Dart…….
Because Moore knew he didn’t have a quality experienced starter at QB already on the team…..he then decided to draft a 6 year college QB (Shough) they HOPED would be more Advanced and could come into training camp and blow away Rattler and Haener….. showing promise for the future.
Now…. Moore is getting a look at ALL
3 QBs in training camp. Apparently, Shough is NOT as advanced as hoped; based on feedback coming out of camp. Also…Don’t think they like what they see for the Short-Term of this coming season from all 3 QBs.
Now….The QB position combined with the rest of the Team talent… or lack of Team talent…on the Saints roster (backed-up by Vegas and other experts) have deemed the Saints will be one of the worst… if not THE worst ….team in the league per this coming season. Look it up.. it’s all over the internet.
I have seen the Saints 2026 NFL draft position projected from 1st overall pick to pick #5 in the 1st rd.
If the Saints production is only 2-4 wins and they land in the Top 5…. and assuming that crappy record figures prominently on the QB lack of productivity……
Then Moore will be Drafting a QB in top 5 in 2026.
He really has no choice if a potential Franchise QB can be drafted versus the 3 mediocre QBs he currently has on the roster. Remember… Moore is an OFFENSIVE Coach.
I would have preferred they use the #40 pick (2nd rd pick) on the highest rated player at TE, CB or DL …. rather than spend it on Shough… but what’s done is done.
