BLM Opens New Oil Lease Sale in Eastern U.S.

The Bureau of Land Management is preparing to auction off oil and gas leases in Louisiana, Michigan, and Mississippi this September-marking yet another step in the Trump administration's accelerated push to revive U.S. energy dominance.
Announced Friday, the BLM will offer five parcels totaling 2,090 acres for lease on September 23. The lands, which span three states not typically at the center of federal lease activity, are being positioned as part of a broader "all-of-the-above" strategy to unlock domestic energy-even in regions not traditionally considered oil hotspots.
Public protest on the parcels opened today and runs through August 25. The leases are just the first step-actual drilling would still require a full permit review, environmental checks, and coordination with local and state agencies.
quote:
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has made it clear the BLM is back in the business of opening lands, not locking them up. From the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, massive federal tracts are being reopened for bids.
And now, even states like Michigan-more often associated with automotive manufacturing than oil rigs-are seeing renewed federal leasing attention.
The context? Growing energy demand, flatlining clean-energy buildout, and an administration eager to replace foreign barrels with American ones. Trump's team has made the case that leasing public land is a geopolitical imperative, not just a domestic economic one. The Alaska LNG project alone is being pitched to Asian buyers as a strategic alternative to Russian or Qatari gas.
With this Eastern lease sale, the message is clear: no basin is too small, no parcel too obscure, in America's bid to reassert energy dominance. Whether this creates new production or simply opens more political doors, it's a marker of how radically the federal energy playbook has shifted-again.

Of course, someone has to be willing to nominate and bid on these parcels. Will be interesting to see how much attention it gets.

Greater crude oil production is great and all, but we need more refineries and refining capacity

Most of us will not read the title as being related to the bureau of land management

I've never understood this approach. Not every area is productive. Maybe these areas are, but private companies typically do their geology and geophysics well before any leasing program starts up.

Already existing leases…nothing new.

Michigan the unknown oil and gas province?
Michigan has a long history of oil production, with significant activity since the 1920s. While the state's peak production occurred in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Michigan remains a modest oil producer, ranking 18th in the US. The industry has evolved, with a shift towards deeper drilling and the use of advanced technologies like hydraulic fracturing

Don't disagree at all, but there doesn't seem to be much willing investment of capital here in the U.S.

They desperately need a name change

I've always refused to abbreviate Black Lives Matter with BLM. I've worked with the real BLM for years.

The earliest recording of oil production numbers from the EIA, at least on their website, was 1981. Michigan was producing about 89,000 bbls/day.
2024 showed about 12,000 bbls/day.

Does the Michigan OOGM approve drill permits where fracking is proposed? Genuinely curious if they allow it up there.

Been retired for a while.. never did anything in Michigan.. we had some projects run by but economics and risk not on our range..
But they frac up there .. conventional and trying unconventional? .. I believe the quality was not there.. idk.. I am sure someone with knowledge could chime in.. I am sure that Michigan has no problem with any oil industry activity in their state ..
