Anyone on here ever had an exploratory surgery?

Have one scheduled soon for unexplained abdominal pain that’s been persisting for the past 2 years. Had a million different kinds of tests and imaging that showed nothing. Nervous as hell because it’s pretty invasive but worth it since my QOL has been absolute dogshit. Luckily insurance is willing to cover it

No but best of luck to you

What other symptoms do you have (ie. bleeding w/ bowel movements, etc)?

My husband had some kind of exploratory mediastenoscopy over 16yrs ago... thankfully all was well but it was nerve wracking at the time.
I hope they find the cause of what's ailing you and that there is a remedy for it.

Bloating and nasty abdominal pain are really the only thing I’ve had tbh

They’re gonna cut your gallbladder out and you’ll still have problems but now you’ll have diarrhea all the time
ETA: stop eating carbs

Dang
Good luck.
Hope they're not Aggie doctors, fwiw.
I'd hate to be indebted to those cultists if there's a positive resolution.

Is the pain truly abdominal like around belly button or more epigastric such as with heartburn (higher up)?
Either way, I hope you can get some clarification and some relief. A good doctor will be able to develop a differential diagnosis if the pain is further characterized by timing, certain foods, location (if possible to describe), etc.

Is it really worth it in the end if they don’t even find anything? Part of me thinks that surgeons relent to doing it because they don’t want to turn patients away and lose revenue for the hospital

I hope you're okay and feel better.

It’s more epigastric than abdominal

Not in an exploratory lap. It’s to simply diagnose, not treat

What’s your exercise routine and diet like? Height/weight?

Yes... it sounds like your last option for answers- and I think, with your lackluster health, you'd regret not taking that chance. You'll never know if you don't try it.
Maybe just research and make sure you have a very keen surgeon for this. I imagine some surgeons are better than others at sussing out undiagnosed problems.

I don't know... just make sure you are getting the right surgeon for the job. There really are things they can't see until they're "in there".

I would not like someone to cut me open just to look and see what they can find.

Well, yeah...
If you're in chronic agony though, you may feel differently. I would.

With diagnostic tools they have now it seems crazy they’re going to just cut you open and look around.
