Definitely better the second time. Sam Rockwell is just the best in the role of dumb cop whose character evolves thoughout the movie. Story never gets actual closure but I like it that way.

The Ninja Turtles thread above got me thinking about Rockwell’s career and wanting to watch some of his movies I haven’t yet. This and The Way, Way Back are the first two I think I’m going to check out.

It's just a great movie with a great cast delivering some great material overseen by a great director.

It is everything that modern cinema should be (and, franky, could be), but the suits are just too lazy to do it. Maybe they will rediscover this capacity now that throwing insane amounts of money at lazy, boring, uncreative 9th reboot or 12th sequel of an old, worn out IP isn't working they way it did 4 or 5 years ago.

I mean, Martin McDonagh could probably make a film of this quality every other year or so. They've given him 4 major releases in almost 20 years (with 1 in production).

Hollywood needs more Martin McDonaghs and fewer Kevin Feiges or Rian Johnsons, IMHO.

I came close. The movie felt like it was written by an alien, or someone with green hair. I call it "r/thathappened" the movie. "I told off the local priest, AND EVERYONE CLAPPED!!" "I tried to blow up the police station because of my shitty assumptions, AND EVERYONE CLAPPED!!!" My god. This movie sucks 3 shades of arse.

Its a movie that has no idea what its setting is. So it doesn't work either as a parody of that setting or as a mirror of it. Its very much a European's take on small town America after reading a few NYT articles on what they are like.

The characters aren't likable or realistic. Its like they are a collection of individual archetypes instead of trying to actually be people.

And I don't think this movie was really breaking any ground with the cinematography either.

Just a complete waste of space and time. I don't think you could pay me to watch it for less than $100.

I really enjoyed this movie a couple months back when I watched it.

I stumbled across The Way, Way Back on a tick tock video and I really enjoyed that movie too. It was just short. I wanted more of it.

I liked it but McDonagh is best with darker comedies like his other 3 films.

Check out Glory Daze with Ben Affleck, John Rhys Davies, French Stewart, Alyssa Milano with cameos by Matt McConaughey and Matt Damon. Pure mid 90s low budget madness.

It makes people of a certain age miss the old days.

When they get the DNA results and it came back negative, and they still decided they were right and DNA is not reliable all of a sudden and they will continue with their vigilante schtick, I audibly said "Why?" in the theater. Sweet sassy molassy this movie is elite level stupidity.

I love that movie. Kinda stumbled upon it on HBO or something and wound up watching the entire thing. Great writing and cast. Steve Carell plays a great a-hole step dad

Not sure if I've ever seen such a difference in opinion on this board over a movie

Different strokes for different folks. I don't know what anyone sees in this film other than as a case study of how little Europeans know about rural Americans.

Without context, go read the Plot synopsis on Wikipedia. It's madness.

Also, go watch the video posted by Corinthians of the "awesome scene" by Sam Rockwell. The context was, the guy put up the billboards for Frances McDormand and wouldn't take them down when he tried to strongarm him. And he was angry his idol (boss) just died...so he threw him out of a window. Bad fricking arse, dude. The whole movie plays like Reddit fan fiction.

This movie is so out there it's insane. I have to wonder about anyone who sees this movie as an excellent film. I think they need professional help.

At first, I thought is was a perfect explanation to Ace Midnight's query of why we don't get more of these movies. Then I decided to take a deeper look, it is 90% of RT with an 87% Popcornmeter, and on IMDB, it is at 8.1 with the votes at or lower than 5, at only 3.9%. It turns out the people who don't like it are outliers and overrepresented in this thread.

Its not about Rockwell's character being a badass hes a mommas boy on a power trip and an awful cop.

Still incredible acting.

I don’t think it was a waste of time like the previous poster, but I don’t get all the fanfare. Hollywood seems to be really in love with Frances McDormand. Frankly, Rockwell stole the show.

Add “beat up a teenager in front of a hundred people” to the list of ridiculous things that she does in the movie.

I thought he was intentionally being portrayed as closeted gay and likely psychologically abused by his mother.
