Adding Kids to car Insurance

I’ve heard from multiple people that insurance agents are telling people now that they didn’t need to add their kids to their insurance. If they got in a wreck, they would be covered because the vehicle is covered and they would just need to add the kids after. The insurance agents won’t put it in writing.
Just curious if anyone has dealt with it where your kid got in a wreck not on your insurance and if they covered.

I’m teaching a 15 year old to drive and wondered if Ineeded to put her on insurance.
I take this thread as a no. Thanks for the legal advice.

Get that in writing baw. You do not want to find out the hard way that you are being lied to.

I was told if they live in your house and are licensed they have to be on the policy. 3 cars. Years 2012, 2012, 2014. $820/mo. Fun times.

Get ready, it isn't good, ok or oh no, it's holy sheet

I didn't have to add mine until she was actually licensed. The permit period was "free" and she was covered by virtue of being a household member.

Same. Then it doubled.

I can't remember the ramifications, financially, of adding her... but we did put her in the oldest car we had AND made her pay us the difference per 6mo policy for coverage.
Now she's her husband's problem.

Out agent told us this was not true.
When my son finally was ready to drive at 17, we just ended up giving him his older sisters suv instead of buying something for him and it ended up saving us a lot of money. Her car was already on the policy is why they said it was a lot cheaper.
My wife called three other companies and they all quoted obnoxious prices to insure a $15K vehicle.

I bought her a new car. Not sure if that mattered. It wasn't a very expensive car.

I didn’t put my kids on my policy when they started driving. One of them got in an accident, insurance covered the claim and then I added them. I was prepared for it to be a big deal but it wasn’t, so it was worth it IMO to save serious $.

We saved the new car gift as a moving-the-heck-out present.
She's married so that cuts down on the age adjustment for her and her husband, thank goodness.

I'm getting ready to do the same. I was told you didn't need to add them while they have their permit and you are in the vehicle. You do have to add them once they have an actual license and can drive on their own.

My agent told me at my next renewal in November I will need to list all drivers in my household and anyone not listed will not be covered. They’re changing the language on our policies.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever read.
People from Louisiana are so cheap and are always looking for a go around no wonder they love Trump

In MS, it’s the car that’s insured not the driver. I have 6 cars and got away with putting myself and my wife down as primary drivers. When one of the kids had a wreck they got wise and required that I add the one that was driving. I still don’t think I had to do it.

If she has her own car and will never be driving any other car in the household, be sure to exclude her on your other vehicles. They won’t tell you this is an option, but if you/your wife drive nicer cars it’ll lead to a good bit of savings.
Best thing you can do with a teen driver is buy them a beater with cash so you only have to carry liability
