Penning is optimistic about the shift. He told The Times-Picayune's Luke Johnson, "the things I do well, I think fit better at guard." That's certainly the hope as Penning steps into a make or break season.

There are many who believe playing in a phone booth will help Penning. Penning noted the close quarters allows him to "just connect on guys and get on them early, versus tackle where you've got a lot of space between you and the edge rusher."

quote:

We've seen Kellen Moore go through this process before with the Eagles
One of the biggest aspects that gives faith that Penning can make the transition to guard is Kellen Moore's previous success with a similar move. Just a year ago, Moore was tasked with helping Mekhi Becton move from tackle to guard. The results were great.

We know Penning isn't lacking in physicality and is at least a capable run blocker but suffers with the agility needed at the NFL level at the Tackle position. This may turn out to be a smart move particularly with Moore having dealt with a similar situation at Philly.

This group was a weakness, but I see it will now be a strength.

I have said since the second he was drafted is that his floor is a solid guard.

Agree, optimistic this move works out to salvage something from the pick. Penning is tall for a guard and has difficulty getting low so I’m skeptical, but it would be a nice problem to have if he plays well enough to consider a 2nd contract.

His strengths all point to the guard position. He is not a finesse blocker he is an aggressive mauler. Just doesn't have the footwork to be a Pass blocking Tackle. Hei is a road grading run blocker.

Good. I think he is well suited to playing in a phone booth.

I said after his rookie year he should be moved to left guard after seeing him. Only took years for it to finally happen.

Just a typical stupid Loomis move counting on a raw small school rookie to start at LT.

A lot of people called this (not me) early in his career. But reading the quoted text does sound optimistic, and this board will be thrilled to see him help solidify the o-line instead of being a liability. Of course, when he ends up on his arse because he lunges at a stunt, the gameday posts calling it out will be hilarious.

Wouldn't call it stupid, just arrogant thinking he could keep going to that well. Saints staff have done a very good job finding o-linemen from small schools, Bushrod, Armstead, Evans, Strief... The failure was the oline coach & OC not seeing the need to make this move until this offseason

Drafted between 2006-2013. That’s a long time and a lot of misses since.

Specifically talking about the oline.

2014: 6th rounder on Rooks - 6th round who cares
2015: 1st on Peat - ironically once the project was complete, became a solid LG
2016: None
2017: 1st on Ram - All-Pro cut short due to injury
2018: 4th rounder on Leonard - swing and a miss, bounced around a few teams, but never caught on
2019: 2nd on McCoy - great pick
2020: 1st on Ruiz - still starting
2021: 6th on Landon Young, still hanging around as a backup - solid value for a 6th
2022: 1st on Penning - so far a big miss, but if it works out at LG would be a solid pick, just a big reach
2023: 4th on Saldiveri - still hanging around as a backup - all you can ask for with a 4th
2024: 1st on Fuaga - solid pick & 7th on Ezirim - verdict still out, but a gamble on a 7th
2025: 1st on Banks - TBD

11 olineman drafted over 12 years. Of which 7 will be starters (counting Banks as a starter) and 5 of those were solid starters (Peat @ LG, Ram, Ruiz, McCoy & Fuaga) with potential from Penning @ LG and Banks

Wouldn't say it's a lot of misses, reaches sure. The "misses" were Peat (before the move to LG), Penning (so far), Rooks (6th), & Leonard (4th)

The miss is you could have taken Tyler Smith (who shifted early in his career to guard) and played lime an all pro

Neither of these two or Peat started as a rookie at LT. Hell HoF and one of the best tackles of all time Willie Roaf started off at RT.

It’s not arrogance thinking they can start at LT as a rookie, it’s stupidity.

Dominate my arse. The OL is another room at or close to the bottom. I’ll take Zoltan Buday’s word over anyone here.

Zoltan Buday from Pro Football Focus recently released offensive line rankings for the upcoming season across the NFL, and the Saints came in near the bottom at No. 22. Here is what Buday had to say about his choice:
