F’ing dumb

quote:

McDaid explained how the defensive false start, which officially will be termed defensive delay of game, will work: "The definition of a false start has forever been action that simulates the snap," McDaid told reporters Tuesday in Atlanta at the SEC's annual media bonanza. "That's standard, action that simulates the snap is now put on the defense as well, and the officials are being asked to judge defensive movement in that light.

quote:

"This is action that has now been written into the rules, codified that it's illegal, it's what we call delay of game defense. This is not a false start on the offense. The defense cannot simulate action of a snap for the purpose of trying to get his opponent to move prior to the snap."

TLDR: if the Dline all shifts to the left or right and the Oline moves for what is normally a false start, it is now a defensive penalty.

This is stupid AF

So much like touching the defensive player when they jump the OL will now react to a shift on purpose. Genius lmao

If it's only a penalty now, what in the hell did they keep calling on us last year?

I live under a rock most days, but I thought this was a rule as of last year?
Aka why we saw it called all the time.

If it wasn't a rule last year, why the hell would they have thrown defensive delay of game penalties last year...?

Essentially Defensive Line shifts are banned now in the SEC. Smart offensive lines will all move every single time a defense player shifts.

Its crazy

The TLDR is there are no shifts anymore

Disagree completely.

No matter what BS a coach may say, the ONLY reason for that sudden and coordinated shift if to draw a penalty against the OL. The OL gets put in a spot where even the slightest of flinches could be called a penalty and the DL does that to try to create a flinch. It's chicken shite. Just like in basketball where you have guys stick out their leg on a shot, or flop, or initiate contact solely to draw a foul rather than try to execute the play, I don't like when teams do things for the sole purposes of drawing a penalty.

It was called under the category of "disconcerting signals" because the defense would shout something similar to the cadence of the QB to signal the shift. The only problem is the refs were inconsistent in calling it.

Limits one of the things Baker loves to do, but at least the law has been laid down and we hopefully won't have to have this to worry about this year. It killed us against USC.

It shouldn’t be a pentalty in the defense if the oline flinches. Once they set for snap, they know not to move. Why should defenses get penalized for their mistakes?

Oline can easily move now off any little shift or twitch from the DLine and this rule can be manipulated

The exact same thing but it was called "disconcerting signals", which was any attempt to draw the offense into a false start by simulating anything that could result in them to snap the ball.

Last year you could shift so long as your only motion was side to side. We got called for guys shifting with extra motion to try to look like they were starting the play or guys clapping during the shift.

Now if teh DL shifts at all (even just side to side), and OL goes offsides, the penalty is on the defense.

I assume we just won't see any DL shifting this year because it will be an automatic 5 yards for the offense since every OL in the country will be taugh to jump if the DL moves.

So an individual player can still shite, it just can't be the entire DLine in unison?

I respectfully disagree. I liked the DL shift to change the angle or put a defender in a gap which could confuse the offense on specific blocking assignments. If the OL moves, all the better.

In the old days it was just a clean shift though. What got called last year was overdramatic arm pumping like you were getting off on ball movement instead of shifting laterally.

So every time a dline shifts, an olineman can be instructed to jump….equals a penalty on the defense.

Seems about right…wtf

It is.

If the defense shifts and the left tackle sees it, all he has to do is jump - 5 yards for the offense. And we could do that all day.

So if an offense is going quick count, or no count on a drive.

D line now has seconds to get into position, and doing so too suddenly may also generate a penalty?
