Why does LSU admissions take Louisiana kids for granted?

I have had numerous friends whose kids are going out of state because LSU offers almost no money other than TOPS. Two going to Ole Miss, one to Bama, and one to Miss St. My own son was accepted into a PHD program at Alabama that is a full ride and a monthly stipend, and ironically got a rejection letter today from LSU (he wanted Bama from the beginning and applied to LSU mainly because it made me happy). I don’t want to beat a dead horse but doesn’t LSU have an obligation to pursue the best and the brightest locally? It’s no wonder our best young people leave the state, their own state university doesn’t value them.

Not sure.
For about five years now my friends who had kids in Catholic schools down here have had to send their kids out of state. Some even send theirs to ULL.
These are 3.9 GPA and 30 ACT kids. LSU laughs them off.

I used to work for LSU admissions and spent years living on the road across the country recruiting high schoolers. You would be enraged if I put in writing all the things the very higher ups there said and did to favor minority students over white students. I’ll never put some of it in writing because at this point, I have no proof other than my own ears and eyes but it was exactly what you’d expect. As for denying your student, I’ll say if LSU denied him, he flat out didn’t meet requirements because minority students who don’t meet the requirements were (and I assume still are) admitted based purely on their race and a white person’s ASSUMPTION that they were at a disadvantage because they were black. Now ain’t that some shite, huh?

“because LSU offers almost no money other than TOPS”

Because they are already getting a free ride from other peoples taxes?

Chase that out of state double tuition money…

The state of Louisiana can’t afford to offer more financial incentives for in-state college students because the state of Louisiana has to spend so much state money propping up the economic anchor that is New Orleans.

Fun fact: New Orleans is the only city in America with more than 100k residents which takes in more tax payer money than it produces in revenue

No other state has to deal with the headache of your major city being a net anchor on coffers

But if the kid is on scholarship they arent paying. A friends kid is getting paid to go to Bama this fall once you add up all the things they are giving him, not just tuition....room/food/1yr abroad for a total of 5yrs/plus a stipend. The kid is making money.

LSU offered TOPS and nothing else.

My youngest ended up at Miss State because LSU waited forever to accept her.

I have since learned that customer service at MSU is light years ahead of LSU. My middle child is at LSU and it is always something with LSU. The latest was he registered for summer classes and found out the day of class that he was waitlisted. Seems they could have let us know sooner.

I graduated from LSU and love it, but they don't give a shite about the students.

TOPS is no where near a free ride. i had 2 kids at LSU BR the last 5 years and with top level TOPS and a 750.00/semester academic scholarship it still costs 15K a year.

Room and Board (mandatory for Freshman), and fees are significant.

Blame King, Marie , and Jose

They started LSU down this path. Thankfully they are all gone, but the minions remain. There is a Leg Auditor or IG report out there that established the wasted tens of millims of dollars on out of state kids with little to no return as 85% of the kids return home. They don’t become Louisiana taxpayers or donors to LSU. The primary obligation of LSU is to provide an affordable secondary education to the high school graduates of this state. The three above changed the financial priority of that mission. If anything , they completely screwed two groups : the best high school students this state generates ; deserving minorities of this state. But hey, look at us we have a huge student population that is enrolled for a year or two for New Mexico, Arizona, California , etc

Because they can… I’ve thought about this a lot. My son is also going to Bama with a 5-year fully paid scholarship, room and board, study abroad etc. I think TOPS has a lot to do with LSU not being generous with the top academic students. Louisiana is a state where generations of families live and stay together. A lot of high achieving academic kids will stay here no matter what. We train them to grow up to love LSU. A kid that graduated with my son also had a 36 and was national merit and he is going to LSU despite them offering him very little more that TOPs. He could have had a full ride many places.
Thankfuklly TOPs is finally increasing their top award to 12k plus now for kids making over a 31 on ACT. That will at least now cover LSU tuition and fees.

What baffles me is the government’s push to keep kids in Louisiana after college in the local workforce, but they reject Louisiana residents with good grades from LSU. More than likely, if they leave the state they won’t come back here to work.

never understood the mindset over the last couple of decades where people think someone else should pay for their college, colleges/unviersities are businesses, for-profit businesses

This. It only covers tuition so the schools gouge you with other fees then there’s the room and board.

It’s been going on for 25+ years.

I had TOPS and LSU gave me a campus job and very small scholarship.

I only applied to 3 schools. LSU, USL (yes it was still USL), and Florida State. USL offered nothing. Florida State was full scholarship. I was semi-tempted to take it, but I knew I’d be in the stadium at Florida State on Saturdays and always wondering in the back of my mind “I wonder how LSU is doing right now/what’s the score”.

Wasn’t really ever a serious option for me. I was always headed to LSU. But yes I agree with you, OP.

My granddaughter went to school in LA in middle and first two years of HS. Academic all star. The only thing the counselors pushed was LSU, due to TOPS.

Here, she's been exposed to the Ivies and other elite schools. Its night and day.
