U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said letters notifying smaller countries of their U.S. tariff rates would go out soon, adding that his administration would likely set a tariff of “a little over 10%” for those countries.

Trump, speaking to reporters after his arrival from an event in Pittsburgh, said he was very happy with “simple deals” already announced that set blanket tariff rates for more than 20 countries and would address tariffs for remaining countries soon.

“We’ll be releasing a letter soon, talking about many countries that are much smaller,” he said. “We’ll probably set one tariff for all of them ... probably a little over 10%.”

I'm annoyed about this one because my favorite coffee beans come from Ethiopia. Using trade deficit as a way to measure equity between us and a country like Ethiopia is dumb. They're poor. They can't afford to buy anything from us. We also don't have the climate to grow coffee.

So we shouldn’t tariff Ethiopia because mule74 likes their coffee, essentially penalizing Community Coffee because they source their beans from larger countries like Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia?

There are products we cannot produce domestically. Those need to be carved out.

Kinda what I think. Madagascar main export is vanilla beans and coffee. No way they will ever have the wealth to import high dollar American products. I'd just leave them alone. They have enough problems.

My question was somewhat of a joke, somewhat serious. I don’t know the answer, but yeah probably a good idea to give breaks for products we can’t produce (like coffee beans), but have to be fair to all countries/companies. Just my $0.02.

Any policy decision that moves an economy away from a 100% pure capitalist system automatically picks winners and losers. It’s never fair.

That’s not an argument to say that we shouldn’t enact these policies, but they will never be fair to all companies or industries.

They could buy our cars. They heave historically had astronomical tariffs on vehicles produced outside the country, despite the fact they don’t have the capacity to produce their own. You think a used car is expensive in the US? Look at used 2000 Ford Focuses for the low price of $25k USD.

I mean the way the tariffs are being explained...it kinda seems like it's on a whim anyway. Might as well add some random caveats in there.

At minimum, ensuring mule74’s access to the beans should resolve any outstanding national security issues.

Tariffs I’m dealing with, consulting in food production:
-Cocoa
-Papayas
-Seasonings & Spices
-Pineapples
-Cashews

All products are manufactured in the US and will have to raise cost.

Or we could create an intelligent trade policy which acknowledges that there are things we either can't produce, or have no interest in producing, and carve those items out of our analysis and policies.
