I just planted a new plumeria at my house. The guy said it was from a clipping off the original plant. Any tips on getting it to flourish? It's been in the new planter for about 4 weeks and it's starting to sprout some new leaves.

It needs to be planted in something extremely fast draining. Mine is basically in a mix of sand, pumice, peat, and perlite. You will get the best performance by having this sort of mix and watering every day in this heat. They grow on lava rock in Hawaii. Drains fast, rains every day.

You may get some flowers next season. Probably not enough time this year. Mine was a young plant last year and had 2 flowerings. Now it's 7 feet tall and has been flowering since May.

When it starts getting cool, just stop watering. The leaves will fall off and it will go dormant and turn into sticks. I did not water once from December to March. If you see it shriveling and getting mushy, it needs water. Give it like a cup of water at a time. Don't soak it in winter. It will take damage below 38F and needs to come inside on those nights.

When it starts to warm up, resume gradual watering and it will wake up and do its thing.

Thanks. Does it have any restrictions for use of slug bait and/or pesticide? I’ve noticed some of the leaves have been getting eating a little bit

Not that I know of. I have to spray the undersides of the lower leaves for mealybugs and use pyrethrin and isopropyl alcohol for that.

Damn, that ^ looks awesome! Big and bushy...if you're into that, lol.

We had a couple for a few years. Took them out of their dirt and brought inside for the winters. The 4th winter they rotted. Plumeria can get root bound from what I read back then so re-potting each spring made sense. Don't know why they rotted.

They really like fertilizer to help blooming. I found some labeled Plumeria Food or something like that, probably just overpriced basic fertilizer. I use it on our Pride of Barbados now that the plumeria are gone.

That's a big ole plant there! Not exactly what I was expecting when I bought it, but too late to turn back now haha.

Oh yeah boss. Plumeria is a big tree. But also a tropical houseplant. But also goes dormant in winter. Weird plant lol.

Update on this one. I tried to relocate the plumeria to a new planter that was a little bit larger, and I replaced potting soil with a mix that supposedly has better drainage. The plant does not seem to be taking to it well...

The leaves are dropping and starting to lose their bright green color. I ended up moving it back to the original planter because the new one was too large and the plant was falling over.

Hopefully it is just stressed out and not dead. I've been trying to soak it once every couple of days but haven't been watering everyday since it seems that you're not supposed to.

Let me know if anyone here has comments.

Brought one back from HI last year to FL, about a foot
Stuck it in a potted plant situation outside
It’s thriving
Nothing other than the potted soil I originally used and Florida summer

Sorry I don’t think that’s much help

Plumeria are beautiful and some smell very nice. A lot of pretty color options.

Where do you live? My dad is a master Gardner and plumeria expert.

Probably just transplant shock. Move it into the shade until it recovers.

Do not water until large leaves appear. You could get root rot with too much water when the cutting is first planted. I also quit watering around Nov to let the soil dry out before putting the plumeria's away for the summer. Also you should have left the cutting in the old container. I don't touch touch new plants for at least a yr of growing season. You do not need to fertilize until next March when the plumeria shows leaves after winter. When the temp goes below 40 deg you will need to move it to someplace warmer. I use my garage but it's walls are enclosed and there is a 900 sq ft apartment above garage. I use Nelson's plumeria fertilizer.

Mine is in a pot, but have gotten it to bloom multiple times this year with the Bloom Booster Miracle Gro (Purple box).
