Damn we really like that place. The restaurant business is not for the faint of heart or wallet

Yup. Bummed but knew it was coming as I got to know the owner personally in recent months. Was my favorite pizza spot and one of the first places I ate when I moved to New Orleans.

Also, before any morons who have never eaten there come in with “go woke go broke”, it has nothing to do with that.

What’s the story ? The owner was pretty blunt in the IG post about business being brutal.

I remember them, unfairly, catching a lot of flak here during/after Covid.

As far as I know, the lease. They didn’t want to compromise product or service by doing UberEats/Doordash etc. Owner is also ready for something new.

Really good spot. The food was awesome, and the service was always great. They had a phenomenal staff that was always friendly & welcoming.

But Walked by too many nights to an empty dining room. Hard to figure the little things that would lead to this. I know a lot of places are on the chopping block due to the economy but Ancora had the bones to withstand, I felt.

Uptown landlords have been ruthless lately. I wonder what some of them are thinking, ie the tool the ran off Juan’s for that shitty steak place.

Uptown Nola in general is pretty grim these days. Shuttered storefronts everywhere you look.

I've read some things that landlords were giving sweetheart deals to a lot of places during and after Covid, but now they have started upping the rents far beyond pre-covid values, but the demand at restaurants isn't there because tourists and conventions haven't come back (and may not), and people just aren't going out to eat anywhere near as much

How would the Husky put them out of business when they serve completely different foods and price points?

Sad to see, Ancora was one of the original places on the Freret gentrification movement

The building with High Hat/Ancora was sold a couple years ago and lease went up. Sounded like a pizza price increase + doing online orders could’ve kept the ship afloat, but they didn’t want to do that - because pizza shouldn’t be that expensive and online means constant bad reviews + taking servers away from their tables and tips. Tough decision for sure, but made a lot of sense when explained to me.

Generally speaking, landlords aren’t raising rent to be greedy. Especially right now bc there really isn’t anyone else to fill the vacancy. The cost to own retail property is only going up just like everything else right now. This is a no win game

Of course. New owner has to charge enough to cover the appreciated purchase price plus maintenance. Absolutely a no win situation for those in the food service industry.

And being in Orleans parish doesn’t help.

I think we will see more and more of these restauranteurs relocating to Jefferson Parish and even St Tammany.

Good point. I know my family used to hit up Ancora twice a week or so. Now we go to the husky instead. Haven’t been to ancora since the husky opened. I just assumed others did the same

The pizza wasnt good. They had rules on how to make a true Neapolitan pizza posted on their website, and on a sign in there restaurant, but never actually followed the rules. The undercarriage was never fully cooked which always led to a floppy mess. They also used to have happy hour every late night, but stopped doing that years ago. Apps used to be really good, but pricey. Combined with a controversial owner, and its not a surprise they will be gone. Had a good run though!

And if you had read those rules, you would know they mention nothing about the undercarriage. From what I recall of the pizza I had in Italy, Ancora was pretty much spot on.

Apps are still good and prices in line with every other restaurant in the city. The controversial owner has been a silent partner for quite a while now, the guy running the spot is genuinely one of the nicest and down to earth people I know.

In summary, no, it’s not a huge surprise they’re gone…but it’s not for any of the points you raise.
