recommendations? I don't know what is considered a comfortable chair for work and gaming. I just know the cheap cushioned dining room chair I'm using now isn't going to cut it in a few weeks.

Mesh chair is where it's at. Don't buy those dumb race car looking chairs. They're shite.

2nd the mesh chair. Have almost that exact chair at work. About $150 on Amazon.

Steelcase or Herman Miller are worth the investment. Similar to a bed, you are spending years of your life in an office chair so make it worth it. Just my .02.
You can find refurbished/refinished versions for 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of retail from office resale shops who buy entire office buildings wirth of furniture when companies close up shop or remodel.

I've thought about the used Herman Miller route. I'm guessing Ebay is the best way to find them?

Don't like the mesh chairs, but I'm kind of a fat boy these days (though I never liked them).

I live in Houston and I looked up an office furniture resale shop on the Google machine and called and asked what they had. Probably something similar if you live near a metro area.

As much time I spend in my home office, a chair is something I don't mind splurging on. I've had an Herman Miller Embody for a couple years now and love it. Sure it's expensive but part of that is the 12 year warranty.
They usually have a 20% sale 1-2 times per year.

I have three herman miller aerons. Best damn chairs ever. Buy them on Facebook or craiglist used. Can get them for $300 to $400

Aeron or bust - this guy gets it

Some will recommend Herman Miller or Steelcase and I'm sure they are great chairs but I have been using a cheap Office Depot Serta chair for a decade only complaint is the "leather" is cracking.
Office chairs seem more of a personal choice like a mattress or shoes, so just want to put it out there it's not 100% necessary to spend $500+ on a chair.

I agree. I have an Aeron that I bought from Crandall Office Furniture. It's alright, but I actually wouldn't recommend it blindly to everyone.
The Serta you mentioned is probably a great chair. (Better than the gaming chairs and such.)
The most important part of finding a good chair is one that fits your height and keeps your spine in a good posture. After that, it's whatever your personal taste is.

This is the way. I got a used Steelcase Gesture 10? years ago for under $300. You pick the one you want and wheel it out. Still using that chair now. The only thing I did was replace the casters with rollerblade style ones.
