I have a 2018 Mazda CX-9 with about 65k miles on it. We purchased it about 4-5 months ago. Had it checked out by our trusted local mechanic before we bought it and had them do an oil change right after we bought it. No issues until the oil light came on today. The oil level seems a bit low but not too bad. It does not leak any oil that I can see and it runs great. We are due for another oil change in about a month or 1k miles. Spoke to our mechanic and he just suggests we bring it in for the next oil change. He didn’t seem concerned. Should I be?

That isnt good.

Check cold oil level asap.

How many miles since oil change?

How low is "not too low"?

Burning oil, when you start the motor, do you see white smoke come out the tailpipe? After the car has not ran in a while.

You better check the oil level every 3-4 days, it's probably burning it.

We had a Camry that started burning oil and eventually blew the head gasket .

May just be sensitive to low levels. My sister had a 2013 cx-5 and the brake fluid was just barely in the low and the light popped on. I topped it off, didn't need much and it went out. Never checked it again....oops.

White smoke means a head gasket or cracked head.

we haven’t seen any smoke. If it were burning oil wouldn’t it run kind of rough as well as smoke?

My Expedition has been burning oil for 100K miles. Has 180K on it. I check the oil every week and put some in if need be.

Start buying cheap oil. Keep a funnel, a quart of oil, and some napkins in your car. Keep the funnel in a plastic bag so oil doe get on stuff.

Change oil at regular intervals.

I burn about 1/2 quart a week. How much are you burning?

just shy of the recommended level but that was when it was hot. So I presume when it’s cold it will be a good bit lower.

Mazda fan, here.

Join mazdas247
very knowledgeable group.

Could be something simple like an oil change reminder that someone forgot to reset. If it was catastrophic I would think the check engine light would come on.

I'm in the market for a new vehicle now because my 2018 mustang had a coolant leak and needs an engine replaced. Just took an uber to the dealer to get the loaner yesterday, and rode in a 2012 Mazda CX-9 (v6), driver said it had about 190k miles on it. Was going to add the CX-9 to my shopping list until I saw this thread they just don't make them like they used to

yes, and no smoke, no oil on the garage floor either which is why I’m perplexed.

I'd change the oil and keep an eye on the level and see if it's dropping.

Not necessarily. I had a radiator have a small leak right by the air intake. Coolant went into the air intake and the result was white smoke out the tailpipe and some condensed coolant.

But I did initially think I had a head gasket or head issue. Thank god it wasn’t.

Could just be a valve cover gasket leaking a tad. Oil filter may not be seated properly. Could be a leaking gasket somewhere. Mechanic also may not have added enough oil originally. Some motors just burn oil too.

Could be anything. Could be nothing.

If you trust your mechanic ask him to do another look over. If you don't, find a new guy for a second opinion.

Same with my Expedition. If it’s burning that little oil, just keep it topped up till next oil change.
