What's the principle enjoyment from things like ships and guns?

I ask this out of curiosity. What is the feeling associated with these things that keeps people, particularly guys, so hooked?
I have fired many weapons. It's not a foreign activity. But, when I do, I don't feel the same thing that some of my friends feel. I can tell. They get really excited, they're enthralled in the activity. I could never fire a weapon again in my life and be entirely fine. in fact, I think I'd prefer it.
Same with ships. I don't find them to be these marvels that some people do. I think they are cool, but some people just get absolutely passionate about ships and their maiden voyages, and whatever else.
Can someone explain it to me?

People have hobbies, your probably enjoy some things more than other people do.
Guns on the other hand, they probably can't get it up so feel some power shooting a weapon.

Did you ever throw rocks or snowballs or even a ball when you were growing up?
Did you enjoy it when it hit what you were aiming at?
They say steel plates are far better than paper targets for practice because they give that satisfying ding.

I hunt a lot so there is a purpose to why I shoot often. Also, you're utilizing a controlled explosion that you're holding to hit an object with another object. Pretty freakin' cool.
Ships are just awesome in general. I like the old wooden sailing ships. It's fascinating how they figured out how to navigate by the stars and such.
What I really don't understand is some folks fascination with big trucks. Especially when modified to the point of being useless like the guys who squat them.

I still do that. There's a pole I throw rocks at. Very satisfying when I hit it.
My pushback here is that I am throwing the rock. If you shoot a gun, you're not doing anything impressive. It's the doing the work, you''ve just learned to be really still while pulling a trigger.
EDIT -- That does answer the question, though. I never thought about it like that, and I do have that feeling. Albeit not when I'm firing a weapon.

I have a handgun and shotgun for safety. I go out and shoot them a handful of times a year just to be comfortable.
I get no enjoyment or hard dick out of it tho. Just more of a familiar with functionality. If shite hits the fan where I need more guns than that, I’d rather just die.
To each their own tho. I have 20-25 rod/reel set ups each going about $700-$800. I’m sure a lot of people don’t understand that.
I can understand an interest in old shipwrecks from the pirate era that contain mystery and treasure. I have no idea why people risk their lives to get a glimpse of Titanic.

I am only speaking for me on this subject, but I get a mild excited when I'm just at the range, but now that I have been doing some competitive shooting courses, I have unlocked a whole new joy. I like building myself into someone that's capable of being dangerous, someone that can defend myself, my wife, my family, and friends. When I built my AR-15 and it went bang for the first time, it was a rush because I built it with my own hands. If something goes bump in the night, I am working on the ability to be an asset instead of neutral or a negative.

Ive always considered conventional firearms as throwing rocks, really hard.

This, quite frankly, is an ignorant statement. There is a hell of a lot more that goes into shooting than "standing still". It's like asking why people get excited about playing basketball, because it's just "doing the same arm mechanics over and over".

With guns, there's usually something new. New scope, new ammo, you've doing a lot of bench work, something like that. I don't get excited by anything that isn't belt-fed at this point though.
Ships (I didn't say boats,) are massive. Stand on a pier next to a CVN or even an LHA as a kid, and it's over. You see the size of their screws, the multitude of choppers and planes they're hiding, etc. It raises my pulse a bit out of wonderment about how all the mechanics and people work together.
