The most obvious to me is National Treasure…. They left a massive cliff hanger at the end of the 2nd and it looks like we won’t see the pay off.

The other I recently saw was City Slickers… I have always enjoyed the first one and even though the second is not as good… they still leave a massive cliff hanger at the end and it seems that a 3rd would be in order. Duke shows up with a bar of gold and shows it to Mitch… but we never see the pay off…

What other sequels left a thought there would be a third but never came to be?

I thought that scene was the payoff. He found the treasure and they were all rich now.

How about trilogies that shouldn't have been made?

The Matrix was a perfect movie, and ended on a perfect note.

The next two were unnecessary and mostly shite.

The Matrix is an absolute case study on a studio demanding more sequels to bleed a great standalone movie for every drop of blood (money) it can get.

The Wachowskis didn't want to do the 4th one either, which is why it contains so many inside jabs at the studio that pressured them into it. The only good thing to come out of that 4th movie was the trailer.

That and Keanu getting money. Dude is a genuinely good human being so I imagine most of it probably went to helping people.
