Watching a MLB pitcher throwing 77-80 change ups and curve balls.
His fastball is 92-94.
I wasn't expecting that, yet if you can locate, you can still pitch in the MLB.
ETA not saying he needs to start, just surprised to see that in the majors.

At LSU? He was a successful starter at his previous school

Cowan is crafty. Knows how to get outs, just needs to re-find his command and confidence.
I’m excited that he appears to be returning.

No he would be a middle reliever if he is lucky enough to make it.

I think the feeling was that, because he’s mainly a two-pitch guy, teams learned to sit on his change-up, limiting his effectiveness. If that was the case, then hopefully he’ll find a third pitch.

Can he? Well sure he can. But will he, well that, that my dear aquatince, is the question!

Greg Maddux enters the conversation.

at LSU? sure
he was throwing a slider pretty well against Arkansas a good 3rd pitch would go a long way

He had a stretch where he wasn’t landing the changeup for a strike and also falling behind in counts. His stuff doesn’t play great in 2-0, 3-1 counts

What’s great about all this is you don’t have to worry about anything lol in jay we trust .

Greg Maddox got the benefit of a wide strike zone. Not sure how he would fair in today’s game with a lot tighter zone.

Maddox got a g zone because he earned it. He would start the game on the corner and then gradually moved out moving the ump zone with him. That’s called pitching
Cowan can start but won’t go long in a game. Only about 4-5 inning

That’s also called a ball. If it’s out of the zone I don’t care how close you are it’s a ball. What you just described gives him a MASSIVE advantage over hitters. Knowing the ump will call ball 2-3 inches of the plate a strike makes you expand the zone as a hitter. Once you do that it’s pretty much game over for the hitter. The reason I actually responded is what people don’t realize is Maddux actually had a league average fastball. When you talk about him throwing 90-92, the hardest throwers were throwing about 95MPH. So correlate that to today’s game and Maddox would have to be throwing 94-95 to be where he was in the 90’s. He was a product of his time. Sure he was good, but by no means was he even in the GOAT conversation if you take away his 2-3 inches off the plate that he regularly had called strikes. ANY pitcher would drop their ERA by at least 1.50 if they got the same fortuitous calls he got!

What you are failing to enter into the equation is movement. Maddox had fantastic movement and control nibbling at the corners and yes extending the zone. Cowan can be successful in short stints but you can easily sit on a pitch and take him deep. His career will not approach Maddox’s. The movement or lack thereof of the fastball is the difference.
