When did people stop worrying about manners and asking how much you paid for things?

I was raised in a household where it was considered rude and tactless to ask someone how much they paid for pretty much anything.

It was also considered tactless for you to tell someone how much you paid for things.

It seems like everyone wants to ask you or tell you how much you/they paid for things and its gross.

Rant over.

Not normalizing talking about finance is the reason we’re trillions in debt and average American being fiscally illiterate

I don’t think I know a single person outside of a professional setting (looking at their tax returns) that I know exactly how much money they make.

But the OT can tell you how much a plumber makes per hour and what is on his w2 from last year. Wild shite!

It only helps consumers to discuss how much they paid for things. Keeping it a secret only helps bi business

I need to rethink my TD premium membership. It's threads like this that make me question if it is worth the $350 annual fee.

So if I ask my friend how much he paid for his truck because I'm in the market for one that makes me a neanderthal?

Sometimes I ask a general dollar amount so I have an idea what things cost.

Context matters. A legitimate inquiry about something isn’t tacky. Bragging about it is. Asking at all about income levels is trashy.

I don't see a problem with asking that question as long as they don't reply with.. "I could have gotten it much cheaper than that"....

When a colleague asked me how much I paid for my truck, I told him I don't know, my Father-in-Law bought it for me.

If you want to know what I paid for my sweet new LX just ask. No shame in my game. Got the monthly note I wanted. Haters gonna hate.

MSRP on vehicles is highly public information. Maybe have a little tact and instead ask him if there were any incentives that were available so you know what to expect when you decide to spend your own money and stop worrying about someone else spending their money

Sitting around and trying to out dick each other is very new money. Not surprised you’re in favor of it

When everything became outrageously expensive or absurdly cheap.

No one has any sense of cost of anything anymore.

Have you looked at your mcdonald’s receipt lately?

I’m not sure why this is such a big deal to you. It’s not that I’m worried about how a specific person is spending their money, but rather I’d like to know how much I can expect to spend on a new truck. I’m not asking for the guy’s bank statements.

How much do you make per year? Seems like your frustration could be reflected on your financial problems.
