Restored a 300zx once. Damn alternator was on bottom of engine with two retaining bolts on backside with very little space. 2 1/2 hour job.

Changed a water pump on a Passat CC for a friend, the water pump is integral to the block mounted on the bottom side. To get to it you have to pull the entire manifold assembly amongst other things. Every electrical connection etc. Absolute dumpster fire. 8 hours of torture.

Most, if not all cars, have a part that's seemingly simple to replace only to be restricted by space, the type of fastener, etc.

Changing a water pump on almost every vehicle is a shitshow.

I used to have an ‘03 Maxima, was very easy to work on. Had to change fuel pump, just had to pop up the bottom of the backseat and take out 4 screws, then pull it up out of the tank. Took about 30 mins. Every other vehicle I’ve had required you to drop the tank off the vehicle. Current Nissan I have no idea. Hell it’s an ordeal to get the battery out of most cars now.

And it will need to be worked on - a lot. This car started falling apart a 70k miles. It had a plastic intake notorious for multiple design flaws and failures. It was a 4 hour job to change a belt on it. You had to remove a bunch of shite to get to it, all the fasteners were blind and almost impossible to get to. One was a ridiculously long winded hex head bolt you could turn about one flat a a time and there was no way to get anything on it. I had put a mini wrench on a belt sander and cut about half the thickness off of it to do that. That one bolt took about 45 minutes.

VWs are either dreams, or they're nightmares. No middle ground.

Wife (no pics) had one, and it died before hitting 85k. Buddy has same car, and it's bulletproof. He's still driving it after 20 years.

I don't wrench on German cars. Brother had a BMW, and I foolishly thought I could change the headlight bulb. fricker was installed with three torx bits.

Now on the Ford f150 the starter is inside the bell housing and the water pump is under the timing chain cover.

My passenger-side taillight got busted on a Volvo XC60. I went to order the part and hit the YouTube on how to do it as I’m fairly handy. These clowns make you take the entire rear bumper assembly out and even a portion of the interior rear sets in order to change a taillight package.

What in the fvck?!?!? Does no one think of maintenance anymore when they make these things?!?

It’s pretty much accepted that you’re not getting that 3rd bolt in that starter.

my MIL is in her second XC60 and is notorious for cracking head lights and curbing bumper covers. Her insurance agent told her last week she should contemplate something other than a Volvo when she decides to get in her next ride

They absolutely do, and design these vehicles so you have to take it to a dealer for their service department to charge you an arm and a leg.

Yukon headlamp and driving light bulb replacements done in less than 5 mins with no tools. Rotate and pull two L shaped rods, remove headlamp unit, replace plug in bulb. Next, grab and pinch a tab for the driving light unit, replace bulb. Pop both units back into the frame.

This may be one of the few times I thanked a car designer/engineer for making something so simple.
