Remember this coming out back in the day. Seemed like it would be pretty good, but I don't remember anyone talking about this movie. I don't remember any hype.

I've always wanted to watch it but never did. Was in a Depp mood last night and wanted to see if the movie was any good.. Wife and I sat down and watched it last night on Netflix.

We both thought it was great. The cast surprised me. I had no idea that many big time people were in this. Depp was damn good in his role. I thought he did a fantastic job. The movie wasn't epic, but it was really really good.

Did people not like this movie? I never hear anyone bringing it up...

That’s almost every movie set in Boston or featuring characters from Boston.

What a stacked cast and I think depp was by far the worst of the whole crew

Like every movie set in NOLA too. They all think everyone talks like southerners in 1840. Yet to see any movie where its not like that. Pathetic

It was somewhat hyped. I seem to remember it being up for some awards.

They did something to make Depp look taller, which I thought was weird.

He also tried to meet with Bulger but was denied. Bulger or somebody else associated hated it and said they got it all wrong, I can't remember who it was.

It was decent enough but forgettable. I mean, I had forgotten all about it until reading this OP, and then I remembered thinking it was OK.

I liked it but haven't seen it since it came out ten years ago so I don't remember any details about it.

Departed did a good job IMO.

Of course two of the main characters (Wahlberg and Damon) were from there.

I liked it and it had a damn good cast. I know Bulger hated it and was adamant he was not the FBI informant they made him out to be in that movie, but he did have an ulterior motive for saying that.

Even then, it didn't save his arse once he got sent to U.S. Penitentiary, Hazelton in West Virginia. He arrived there October 29, 2018 and by early the next morning he was dead by being bludgeoned to death, stabbed, his eyes gouged out and his tongue almost entirely cut off.

They put him in general population and he had enemies, including former mob members loyal to the Boston Italian faction that Bulger helped get sent to prison.

Talk about FAFO...............

Probably the only movie to ever put me to sleep in the theatre.

This movie suffers from the fact there's too many great mob movies already out there.

I watched it a couple of months ago and thought it was pretty mediocre. I'm a sucker for mob movies and the Whitey Bulger case was wild - especially the fact that his brother was president of the state senate and people just joked about it. "Oh, Billy Bulger's brother is a mobster" - like the guy was some goofball like Billy Carter or Hunter Biden.

I did not know that. Looked at the wiki and it had a quote I liked.

quote:

Steven Davis, whose sister Debra was reportedly killed by Bulger in 1981, stated that "[h]e died the way I hoped he always was going to die."

Deborah Hussey was Steve Flemmi's stepdaughter and Flemmi was #2 man behind Bulger. Flemmi was in a sexual relationship with her when Bulger killed her. Bulger was afraid she knew too much and with her lifestyle of drugs and getting in trouble, Bulger thought it best to get rid of her and eliminate the potential liability she posed.

"the departed" was a fictionalized account of essentially the same story and a better movie

Its the same story that The Departed was inspired from. I watched the movie. It was Ok. I would prefer watching Donnie Brasco, Blow, or Fear and Loathing Las Vegas over it though.

Think most people just remember the bad accents.

Being similar to departed in source material but not nearly as good on top of being made similarly to The Town but not nearly as good, makes it feel pretty forgettable as a film
