Bike repair-explain to me like I'm 5

My sons bike was a little low on air so I went to pump it up. Instead of filling up it completely collapsed. Figured it was a bad tube so I took the tube out couldn't find anything wrong it so I tried to inflate the tube outside of the tire. It inflated fine. Put it back in the tire and now it's not inflating again. Tell me why I'm an idiot and how to fix it.

Please video and post to YouTube so we can laugh at you.

Is the tube twisted when you put it back on the rim? Did you check the inside of the tire? Did you try inflating on the rim without the tire?

Inflate tube outside of tire again and this time move valve stem side to side. Probably torn at the base.

Dip the tube in soapy water and look for bubbles. Check the screw on top of the valve for debris or bb. Also press the valve harder and listen for the air to fill.

Is the stem getting mashed into the wheel a little bit? Maybe the tube valve is getting engaged but the air chuck valve is not.

Stop wasting your time and buy a new tube so your son can ride his bike.

Did you check the air bearings?

Probably low on blinker fluid. Did you fill it with summer air or winter air?

Just buy a new bike. There is no telling what else is about to go out.

Just buy a new bike like a normal person

Tubes are so 2005, go tubeless.
It is likely there is some sort of stem issue. Shraeder valves* don't deal with contamination well and the issues seem 100 times worse on bike tubes.
* I am taking a wild guess that they aren't Presta valve tubes.

To me, it sounds like you are not pushing hard enough to open the valve in the air chuck. The the shader valve in the tube is very easy to open, but the air chuck on the end of the air hose must be pushed pretty hard.

Either leak around valve stem like some said or you are not actually locking onto the valve when you pump with it inserted. New tire is best way to find out

Have your husband fix it.

Is the air chuck seated on the valve correctly?

Dummy
Take the inner tube out and run your fingers along the inside of the tire.
There's something in there puncturing your tubes once they start to inflate.

This is where my money is. Some of those cheap bike pump chucks are finicky.
