my wife has been in hampton pretty much since the holidays caring for her parents, who have/had medical issues. i've been going back and forth since then, but just got back from a 6 week stay. i dont see this area mentioned much on here, so i thought i'd drop a few attraction/activity/F&B suggestions in case anyone is interested now or in the future
attractions:
-in hampton, buckroe beach and grandview point. shockingly excellent beaches with nice sand and decent water. tons of airbnb's in both places. the beaches are well maintained, well appointed and lots of fun.
-in yorktown, the museum of the american revolution is incredible. i'm 58 and i learned a ton of new stuff. don't miss. we stayed several nights at the hornsby house B&B, highly recommend.
-in jamestown, the old fort. it blows my mind that up until very recently they thought that the river had swallowed up the site of the first english settlement in america, but it was there the whole time. its now partially excavated and reconstructed, and excavations continue. there is also a very excellent museum there. we spent all of an entire day in jamestown. note: "jamestown settlement" is not what you want, you want the state and national park area on the island.
-in virginia beach, we took a waterman's boat tour with an active oyster fisherman, had a blast. he takes you to his leases, pulls some up and cracks them open (after an hour on ice), this was a highlight and we learned a lot about the bay ecosystem which is a massive success story of restoration.
-in williamsburg (we didnt go to colonial area or busch gardens, but they are both awesome) williamsburg live for outdoor music and food; we saw the beach boys
restaurants/bars:
we ate or drank at all of these and all are recommended
harpoon larry's, newport news
county grill, yorktown
yorktown pub, yorktown
fullers raw bar, hampton
mama rosa's, hampton
mill creek tavern, hampton
new realm brewing, va beach
precarious beer project, williamsburg
billsburg brewery, jamestown
we had a good time, its a very interesting thing in that that area (the virginia peninsula) is the oldest english/american settled area on the north american continent.

In Williamsburg now. Have made several visits. Love colonial williamsburg and have visited Yorktown, Jamestown, Mount Vernon, Monticello, etc. All drivable easily.
Came for the 4th celebration. We fly into Richmond, rent a car. Williamsburg 45 min drive. Love the history, learn more each visit.

It's worth mentioning that these travel times (especially from Va Beach to Hampton/other side of the HRBT) can vary greatly based on the HRBT. It's currently a construction zone, but the traffic can back up pretty good there. Took me almost an hour to get from VB to Buckroe Beach yesterday lol

You did good. I lived in Williamsburg for about 4 years. The naval boat tour is really cool too. They take you along the shipyards and explain details about every ship or sub that is docked. Doubt the carriers or many of them are there now though given Middle East drama

I travel to Yorktown for work a few times a year. Been to most of these restaurants & recommend them as well, especially County Grill.
I'd also highly recommend Crab Shack right on the James River & Rudee's in Virginia Beach.

If you’ve never driven across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge you should do it at least once. It’s one of those bridges like the Ponchatrain that everyone should do at least once. Two tunnels and open ocean.

Cape Charles is a nice little town on that side worth a visit.

Just got back from a family trip in the area, we also made the long drive to DC.
We stayed at Kingsmill in Williamsburg and the Embassy Suites on Va Beach. The Embassy Suites was pretty new and was probably the nicest Embassy Suites I’ve stayed at.
