Used title to grab your attention. I have a bunch of holly bushes planted at my DSLD house that have all grown into each other and the front flower bed looks awful. I hate working around them because they poke the crap out of me, but they sit in the evening sun and stay green. What’s the best way to trim them and make them look even and have a better curb appeal?

Use a hedge trimmer. Just eye it up to keep them even. It’s not hard.

How old are you lol? How do you trim a hedge you may ask, allow me to introduce you to the hedge trimmer. I’m sorry but come on it’s like some people have zero common sense.

IMO, prune it back pretty hard. Get the general shape you want, and in a year it'll look decent. Then, maintain it every couple of weeks.

I've been meaning to ask about this...my holly hedges have crept up and up and are higher than I want, and farther out onto the path. I trim back but it doesn't take much to get past the leave. I kind of want to take a foot off the top, but I was thinking it's best to do in the fall? Less weed growth under, maybe? I assume they are hardy enough to roll with it anytime. Middle TN, we do get hard freezes that have taken out newer leaf growth but don't affect the bush as a whole.

I have an entire semi-circle of them and hate trimming them but I do it 4 times a year. I use an Echo HC150 hedge trimmer that can cut nearly a 3/4 inch branch. It’s not like cutting butter but it will do the job. I rake afterwards and haul away the trimmings to a family friend’s farm and put them in his brush/burn pile.

Sometimes I seriously consider having them pulled. They have grown solidly together and are nearly 6 feet wide the entire length of the driveway.

This is what I do. Accept the fact it won’t look perfect after the initial trim.

I use a chainsaw to trim.

Used a pole saw and cut them down real low (1-2ft), they came back great and look like new bushes

I have a huge one near my deck that was covering it. I used to be embarrassed at how small my deck looked from the road so I decided to trim that bush and once I did, I gained some confidence.
