What are you guys thoughts on Joe Sloan. It was obivious he was having trouble calling the correct plays last year. Otherwise , Kelly wouldn't have had to step in and Helped him.
I thought we were hoping to get a new Great OC
Our offense will be super talented at every skill position this year. Hate to see that go to waste

I don't think he's as terrible as people say but we'll see this year. The offense should be fine.

Let’s just say this is a big year for Sloan

he owes Jayden Daniels every penny he receives from LSU

shite or get off the pot.
Not being able to run the ball when you need to (red zone, short yardage) is a big problem.
We will see.

I think a lot of fans see something that isn’t right, don’t know what it is, and assume it’s play calling.
I think Sloan is fine from a play calling standpoint. I think he’s limited in his knowledge of implementing a running game.
We were very weak running the ball. That led Sloan to leaning towards throwing it more…which made things harder due to a lack of balance.
I’m fine with bringing in a run game coordinator to fill the gaps in for Sloan. But, he needs to understand the running game enough to understand where opportunities exist when he sees them and to attack defenses in that way.
Last year, our run plays really were much more of an attempt to keep defenses honest.

I’m hoping Atkins can help with some of the running game concepts. I still remember the A&M where every time Mason Taylor was in motion, it would be a run. I know people getting paid this much to call plays can’t be that uncreative. I’m hoping Sloan has learned a couple things from last year.

i think every play caller looks better when people execute but at times i hated his play calls and play designs
.
especially in short yardage situation

Frank does that.
I just get a sense running the ball is not something Sloan wants to do. Watching LSU line and attempt to execute a running play last year is evidence that wasnt practiced much. Hard to watch.

I thought he looked overmatched at times which is to be expected from a first time play caller in this league. Calling plays at lower levels is a lot different. He has a surplus of weapons to utilize this season in both the run and pass game. I expect him to make a large jump this season with the experience he gained last year. Sloan is a bright guy.

Lots of potential but needs to find a running identity and streamline the offense a bit

I am willing to give him another chance but if we fail to have a run game two years in a row then that’s on him and he needs to go. A&M, Bama, and Florida all knew we couldn’t run the ball so they game planned for that and used it to beat us. We have plenty talented players on OL and RB.

I think a big piece too will be simply committing to the run. It's so tempting to wanna throw when you have Aaron, Nic, TreyDez, Sharp, Brown, Berry, etc. to toss it to, but committing to that run game will help I believe. Part of that, admittedly though, is going to be an ability to get something out of a run, even if it's just 2-3 yards. It was tough at times last year when a running play almost felt like a waste of a down because so often they were no gainers. I, too, am excited for what Atkins may bring to our run game.

Part of all of this is on Brad Davis too. There were too many times last year where Sloan called the correct run and a lineman just got whipped. I like Brad alot but particularly on gap scheme runs (power, counter) we got blown up because we got our face crossed on the backside. Getting your face crossed is a mortal sin in gap blocking and it should never happen when you have presnap leverage.
I actually broke down the film on a couple of games last year for another board and it would nauseate you to see how many times we ran counter/power and had a highway on the playside only for the shade to leak back over the center's face and blow us up from the backside. Thankfully, Chester will be a year older and likely won't even have to play center so I'm optimistic that issue will be fixed.

I don’t think there was anything wrong with Joe’s playcalling from an X’s and O’s standpoint.
My problem is he seemed to get lost in the wash and forget who he had on the field at the time
For instance in the Alabama game Mubenga is making his first start of his career and on the first drive in the red zone we try to run right behind him. That’s a fine play call if Dellinger is in the game. It’s a bonehead play call with a true freshman playing in his first handful of plays in college.
Another game he had Green in a 3 point stance try to reach block an end on an outside run. That’s fine for Taylor but probably not so much for a big wide receiver playing tight end for the first year.
It was little things like that that held him back and I blame most of that on inexperience.

Mostly agree with this assessment.
I think one place where his (relative) inexperience as a coordinator shows up is that we were trying to do too much. There were comments in the preseason last year about how we could run any play out of any formation, almost like an NFL offense. We started the season running a bunch of different gap & zone schemes out of a bunch of different formations.
Unfortunately we weren’t very good at running counter/power. But we tried it a whole bunch for the first ~half of the season before finally simplifying to a much more zone-focused scheme.
I think there’s an argument to be made that it’s better to be good at 2-3 things than being mediocre at 10 things. A big part of the OC’s job is identifying the concepts that they should be focusing on. What are our strengths? How can we exploit those strengths most effectively without falling into bad tendencies?
I can see why he wanted to run power. Our OL was strongest on the outside, and counter/power allow you to lean on those outside guys. But then when your center is getting blown into the pull lane and killing the timing, you’ve gotta make that adjustment quickly.
Idk, I think it’s a lot more complicated/difficult than most people assume. But it’s also part of what he gets paid (along with Frank) to do. Hopefully he learned a lot from last year and we have a better philosophy going into the season this time. I’ll admit that the running game is probably my biggest concern about the team, though.

Didn’t deserve the job. Was promoted to being in Underwood. Lost us a few games last year.
That said, he can earn it this year. No excuses
