It may be time to put a pin in the M3GAN Cinematic Universe.

“M3GAN 2.0” flatlined at the box office, generating a paltry $10 million domestically and $17 million globally in its first weekend of release. While not a catastrophic result given the sequel’s $25 million budget, those ticket sales represent a fatal decline in interest from the original, 2023’s “M3GAN.” The first film ignited to $30 million domestically and $45 million globally and became a sleeper hit for Universal and Blumhouse, ultimately earning $180 million against a $12 million budget.

Instead of doubling down on scares, much of the marketing for “M3GAN 2.0” revolved around the doll’s status as a sass master and camp icon. That certainly makes for a fun promotional campaign, where pithy jokes and silly moments abound in the trailers and on posters. But the choice to focus on comedic aspects could have alienated horror mavens who were craving true frights.

That trailer was fricking awful, I’m sure a lot of people noped out after that.

Couldn’t believe the pivot/ marketing angle they took. Just asking for this to happen at that point, I don’t remember the first one being that popular to decide it can take that kind of risk

Part of me gives them some props for not just remaking the exact same movie all over again; that said, a lot folks probably felt it was WAY too much like Terminator and T2 - jumping from horror to action, as well as having the antagonist of the first movie be the protagonist of the second movie.

I think there needs to be a bigger gap in mimicking premise the better the movie(s) - and considering T2 is a steaming bath of molten joy and awesomeness, people will need to wait until after it's 50th anniversary before bothering.

I just watched the trailer, holy shite that was terrible. They weren't full blown Marvel quippy dialog and basically ripped off Terminator 2 trying to "good guy" the bad robot. I can't picture anyone actually wanting to see the movie after that, even if they liked the first.

It’s more of the confidence in the marketing of like “we know you idiots liked the first one so we KNOW you’ll love the first one with more quips in it. Get in sis!”

Felt like they were trying to force a ground level Barbieheimer type marketing hype behind a property that no one cares about.

The sarcastic, quippy "Joss Whedon" aka Marvel dialog is beyond played out. It was played out over 5 years ago. It's now been a punchline for longer than it was ever popular. Every project that features it heavily, be it movie, tv show, or video game, gets viciously mocked for it. It's unfathomable that there are writers out there who think it's still actually in demand.

I find this whole franchise creepy. I think it only exists so grown men can crank it to what looks like a 12-year-old robot girl.

This is one of the worst cases of “I watch it for the plot” I have ever seen.

That's not it

It was made for girls, have no idea why they decided to make it action suddenly. If dudes go to watch it its pretty creepy.

I’ll see it when it hits streaming but it came out around a packed time for movies with F1, 28 years later, Jurassic World, Superman(next week). How to train your dragon is also still out.

I don’t think M3GAN 2.0 is high on a lot of peoples lists.

What?

Megan the toy robot in the first movie was made for girls. The movie was not a "horror movie for girls."

Took my daughter and mom to see it Sunday in MX4D. It was fun, mostly because of the 4D effects. They enjoyed it. I enjoyed it for what it was, a reason to get out the house on a day with rain in the forecast.

Same thing that they did with Childs Play. Went from horror to comedy.
