In the old days, we had a term: professional students

Those were people who went to college for 7, 9, 12 years. In other words, made a career out of it instead of getting out in the real world and earning a living.
With the advent of NIL, we have professional student-athletes. Some of them make more in college than they ever will in the pros, if they even get there.
So what's to stop them from becoming professional students? Why the arbitrary 5 to play 4? I could see that being thrown out some day and we get to see the Chris Reids and Josh Pearsons of the college ranks, the guys who probably won't make it to the bigs, stay in school and keep playing. Those guys would be legendary.

That is coming sooner than you might think.
Diego Pavia (Vandy QB) prevailed in a lawsuit wherein he was (in essence) granted additional years of eligibility when he otherwise should have been out. His main argument was that the 2 years he spent in JUCO should not count against his 4 years of D-1 eligibility. However, in one of the hearings on the matter his lawyer said the quiet part out loud...that Pavia likely has no NFL future but does have an NIL market as a college player. Thus, not allowing him to play additional years of college football equates to an unlawful restraint of trade

I knew a couple of guys who only enrolled in the Fall semester so they could get the student ID to go to football games "free".

I really hope this never comes to fruition!

I took nine years, but that included two kids, a failed marriage, and a 32-hour-a-week "part-time" job to earn my BS in Mechanical Engineering. Sometimes it's not wanting to go out in the real world, and sometimes it's the real world slowing you down.

Good job sticking with that. ME degrees are tough as shite to get.

Remember Sonny, Mrs. Drysdale's spoiled son on The Beverly Hillbillies?
Milburn Drysdale: Do you know how long that stepson of mine has been going to college?
Jane Hathaway: It's been quite a while.
Milburn Drysdale: 19 years.
Jane Hathaway: 19 years?
Milburn Drysdale: And he's still a sophomore.

Same story for me…took me 8 years to get my BSME after getting laid off from my job. Subsequent 30-year career as an engineer and now comfortably retired.

I'm 35 years in and will probably retire in 3.5 years. My career path took me into control systems (which seemed like someone created the perfect job for the way I process problems), eventually management ( which I hated), and now doing a rotational gig as a systems integrator (glorified babysitting job) on a major offshore facility. It's been a pretty good ride. Bonus, my oldest grandson just got his BSME in 4 years while working. I am very proud of that kid.

Isn't that the truth, when I came to LSU, fall semester 1972, I think full time tuition was in the range of $165- a semester. There were all kinds of kids who showed up for the first 8-12 weeks of the semester then you never saw them again.

graduated in 1979, there was still a photo line in the Assembly Center for student IDs during registration, I had a student ID for the next couple of years just for football games because some of my frat brothers were in charge of taking the pics and making up/issuing IDs
