My wife and I are headed to Alaska next month. We have about 2 days to kill before we hop on our cruise. We will have a rental car for those 2-3 days.

What’s bringing you to Fairbanks? Isn’t it like 500 miles from the ocean?

Scenery.
I would suggest keeping extra food and water in the car. Alaska is very big.
Also fill up the tank.
There is endless natural beauty there. Endless.

We've got some planned time set up already and then ground transport to get on the boat. We just have a few days with nothing on the dance card in Fairbanks.

Try some fresh catch one day at a local place.
I had a killer bison/elk burger when I was up there.
It was overlooking water where planes landed. It was pretty cool for just a lunch in the afternoon.
I cannot understate the size of this place haha.
Depending on the time of year you can get lost in the time if you are out and about.
They have bottomless strip clubs too if yall are into that.

I think we can safely excise that from the itinerary.

I went with my female boss not knowing when I was up there back in 2015.
We had a group of 7 or so.
Awkward but makes you stronger lol.

I wouldn’t suggest it haha.
Alaska, is interesting. People that run away from things end up there.
Its beauty outweighs everything. It’s really a site. I completely underestimated the size of the place. It’s just massive.
Dog sled tours and Helicopter glacier rides as well if that interest you.
The sled dogs are amazing.

You can drive up to the hot springs. I forget what they’re called but they are about 80 or so miles north of Fairbanks. Kind of neat. They also have an ice museum where everything including the building is made of sculpted ice.

We were looking at that. Glad you validated what we were leaning towards.

We spent 2 days there as well before catching train back to anchorage… the train back to anchorage was the best part of Fairbanks lol… they have a little town “the North Pole” with a huge Christmas themed store. Pet caribou/reindeer on the grounds that you can somewhat interact with which was kind of cool. We went in September, tried to see the lights but it just didn’t happen.

However, we caught an uber with a fella that said he hosts people at his house up in the hills for night viewing of the lights. He said he cooks and just lets the group hang and drink and wait for lights to be visible. He had an LLC. Sounded a little sketchy lmao, but I think he was legit. No idea how you would find him though. That’s all I got. Hope yall have a good time!

Ditch the cruise and travel on your own. Seriously. A cruise is the absolute worst way to see Alaska.

There’s not much to do in Fairbanks and there aren’t many decent places to eat. Fairbanks is great for its central location in the state. Your a days drive from the coast and the arctic circle. If you’re feeling adventurous and have a rental car that allows it, driving the Denali highway is the best 2 day trip you can take from Fairbanks. I’d go down the parks highway and up the Richardson. There are a few lodges on the highway you can stay at if you don’t want to camp. If you want to stay in Fairbanks, floating the Chena River is always a great time. Goldstream valley is pretty cool as well. There are decent hikes off Chena hot springs road. The hot springs aren’t worth it. Donnelley creek rec site is a great place if you want to get out of town. It’s about a 2 hour drive.
Can’t stress enough that Fairbanks isn’t a town you visit to see the actual town. It’s all about the access to public land. If you aren’t outdoorsy, into camping or at least hiking, I would skip Fairbanks and hit Homer, Valdez, or Seward

I would agree with this fella, the hot springs were kind of lame. If you’re willing to hike, or float one of the rivers, that is the route I would go. The North Pole is kind of lame too. Just depends what yall trying to do

Good to know. Thanks.

Of these I would pick Valdez. Homer and Seward are madhouses in the summer with tourists and fishermen. Valdez is more interesting and more laid back. Seward is alright. I would skip Homer altogether.
