Edge defender Carl Granderson paced the Saints' defensive line in snaps and PFF overall grade in 2024, and he is not expected to have much help in 2025. Granderson ranked 18th among 119 edge defenders with a 79.7 PFF overall grade last season, and the team's next-best player was Chase Young, whose 66.8 mark ranked 50th. It looks even worse on the interior, where neither of the team's three experienced players ranked among the top 70 players in PFF overall grade at the position in 2024.''

And DL might arguably be the strongest unit on our defense.
LB isn’t bad, but D.Davis cant forever continue to defy age. He has up to this point.

We’re going to have some real pain this year and that’s ok. On a message board we can talk up our players in the offseason but the truth is we have very little depth and our historically good defensive players are now VERY old at their positions.
It’s likely going to take another few drafts to revamp this unit. Fortunately it should give our young QBs some real sink or swim opportunities to keep up with the opposition in games which is really what we need in evaluating if either can be a franchise guy. Which is positive I think.
No hiding a borderline starter behind a strong defense. Either show you have traits that can eventually put up a ton of points in higher scoring games or we move on with a likely high pick and better qb options.

Saints have the worst roster in the NFL. This isnt breaking news.

Bresee is our best defensive lineman. No idea why they didn’t discuss him. Granderson and Young are just guys.
I sincerely hope that Tanoh Kpassagnon comes back from injury and balls out in a contract year. I know he was more of a rotational guy behind Cam and Carl, but I always thought he played really well in his role.
I really think we have to see what Staley does. I HATE HATE HATE SUPER- MEGA-LOATH Dennis Allen the head coach. But he was a great defensive coordinator. I remember the Spags & Ryan era of DCs and know a good DC and good scheme can mean a lot.
Agreed.

On the road to the #1 overall pick and The Arch Era in NOLA

I get they have to use something in order to rank a defense, but when it appears the plan is to completely revamp the front 7 and use more of a 3 down lineman base how useful is last year’s PFF score? A lot of the DLine will essentially be playing new positions across the board

Need to bring in young players and see what sticks.

Come on, it’s the Saints. We’ll manage to F that up. Hell, during the Katrina year we still managed to end up with the #2 pick; although Reggie was Payton’s #1 option.
*and I recall reading something that Hou had the tiebreaker on us, so they had the #1 locked up by 2 games in a season where the team only won 3 games

Another depressing thread by Rita on something we already know.
Get ready for her next stunner..."The Saints rank last in _____."

Yep. Years of terrible personnel decisions and bad drafting by Mickey Loomis, Sean Payton, and Dennis Allen.
It also doesn’t help that they had no plan for life after Drew Brees. Their plan was to change nothing and operate everything as usual.

Chase Young probably gets the most attention from the opposition
Breese carried a 36.5 grade from PFF. 203/219, he’s more of reason for the worst DL title than he is best lineman on the team

The draft in 2026 will primarily focus on defense…. starting with the 1st round pick … if they don’t use it on a QB.
Why you ask ?
Because the Offense has decent OL, WR and RB position groups when compared to the waning Defensive talent on the Saints.

I don’t think that’s overly likely to improve said ranking though unfortunately

Cam , Demario , and Tyrann are 3 of my all time favorite players on Defense. Tyrann moreso for what he did at lsu than on the saints, but still a huge fan.
The fact that all 3 are still on this roster going into 2025 season is malpractice by the front office.
They’d be better suited as assistant coaches while the team rebuilds. Trotting their old asses out there is not only going to lead to a horrible defense it is delaying development of younger players.
This defense is going to SUCK this year.
I am pretty optimistic about the Oline though, that’s one area where we may have solid foundation for the future.

Granderson is our best guy imo.
He was our best defensive lineman 2 years ago. He didn’t really do much last year.
Bresee and Young were on the right side and Granderson moved to the left. Young got penetration and tried to force things outside to Young. I feel like Granderson was kind of on an island most of the time with little help.
At the end of the day, the defensive line didn’t do much and we are kinda trying to say which turd is the shiniest.

It’s why I wanted Ezeriku or Green in the 2nd.

Yup, between our DL and the age at LB we’re going to get gashed again against the run. I don’t think we can improve on 31st against the run.
