This after meeting Clint Eastwood at a party shortly after voting closed.

Almost 20 years later, Crash's win over Brokeback Mountain at the Academy Awards is considered among the Top 5 greatest upsets in Oscar history.

As Brokeback Mountain returns to theaters for its 20th anniversary, a writer behind the 2005 gay neo-Western romance recently recalled its Oscars snub.
Co-writer Diana Ossana recently recalled Crash director Paul Haggis introducing her to Clint Eastwood at a party for the Academy Award nominees after voting had ended, several weeks before the awards show.
“Paul started walking me over and he goes, ‘Diana, I have to tell you, he hasn’t seen your movie,'” recalled Ossana to The New York Times. “And it was like somebody kicked me in the stomach. That’s when I knew we would not win Best Picture.”

Batman Begins shouldve won.
Maybe Million Dollar Baby if they wanted to be artsy.
Kingdom of Heaven theatrical cut sucked but still a better movie if they had released the directors cut in theaters.

Haggis still had the Scientology goons behind him in 2007.

2006 Nominees: Crash, Broke Back Mountain, Capote, Good Night and Good Luck, Munich.
Left out: Sin City, Jarhead, Lord of War, A History of Violence, The Squid and the Whale.
I would rank them: Sin City, Munich, A History of Violence, Jarhead, Lord of War.

You can debate whether BM should have won or not, but Crash definitely should not have.

BM was an incredible film. It's a wild discussion all on its own

Only by the creeps of Pedowood. They were convinced a movie about gay cowboys would just HAVE to win, but then reality gay bashed them

Not a great year for movies, but there were some better movies.
Best ones from Domestic Box Office For 2005 from IMDb Pro)
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Batman Begins
Million Dollar Baby
Constantine
Sin City
Kingdom of Heaven
List is my best movies from IMDb Pro's list of what American film-goers chose to see.

Would be a bold move to give the award to the same movie in consecutive years

Odds-makers. Previous awards bodies and guild wins. Those anonymous voter polls. The fact that people considered it very good at the time, and people did not seem to think that about Crash.
You can acknowledge something is a favorite to win without rooting for it to win.

quote:Yeah, the fact that these were the two biggest contenders says more about how shitty that year was.
Crash and Brokeback both sucked
They weren't even original with the gay cowboy angle. South Park spoofed gay cowboys being in indy films because they were already a trendy, avant garde subject.

Well, it was probably the most decorated film to ever be nominated for Best Picture - for one. It won the Palm d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, it was #1 on a majority of major film critics' Top 10 lists that year, it was on AFI's list of the Top 10 movies of 2005, it won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Drama, the DGA Award for Best Director, and the PGA Award for Best Picture.
It was the odds on favorite to win the top prize that year and its loss to Crash has gone down as one of the biggest upsets in Oscar history. I'm not saying it deserved to win (Munich was my #1 of 2005), but if you actually watch Crash you will find that it was a very mediocre film.
