True Blood First Watch

I just wrapped up my first watch of True Blood on HBO. I was reticent for a long time because I got on the Vampire Train in the 90's with Anne Rice and enjoyed it. Twilight sucked IMO except for the fights.
I have to admit this rang a bit of a different bell. The whole white trash Vampire world of Bon Temps Louisiana is a different animal. It's bad but it doesn't pretend to be otherwise. It has fun with its trashiness. The story and writing is all over the place full of full tilt non-sequiturs racing at high speed. At least there is some good comedy provided by Jason, Lafayette, Pam, and the preacher. I didn't think I would like Anna Paquin in it, but she was better than I thought she would be. Stephen Moyer was flat and uninteresting the entire time. Alexander Skarsgard at least gave it a little depth.
I was surprised by the amount of familiar faces from other films and television shows. The most I can remember from a single series. Lots of people showed up
Rutger Hauer
Christopher Meloni
Joe Manganiello
Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect)
Jerry from Succession
Female Capt from Battlestar Galactica
The Aunt who made kickass breakfast and steaks from Twister.
Lots a bit players from Mad Men etc.
The story meandered and my interest level went up and down throughout, but the most surprising thing is that it was done by the guy who gave us American Beauty. Go figure.
Overall, lots of sex, blood, and trashiness. Decent if fun watch.

First season was phenomenal, such a really unique world they built. I enjoyed the second season as well. Started falling off a cliff after that.
Also, as is tradition.

I liked the early seasons a lot but I don't think I finished it. Hell, I think I started watching season 1 around midnight and next thing I knew it was light outside. It grabbed me early on but it just kept getting more and more ridiculous. I gave up on maybe the last 2 seasons.
The writer came up with a good idea but her writing style seems like it came from a 15 year old girl. I think there were a lot of changes from the books to the show.

It's in my rotation. Deborah Ann Woll, is worth it.

Yep. forgot her. I hadn't seen her in anything until Daredevil.

Same
Pulled an all-nighter and finished the first season. Every time I was going to turn it off, the intro song hit up again and had to listen to it

Couldn't agree more. Some of the storylines got confusing and even a little silly for a fictional TV series about vampires.
By the last couple of seasons, I was grinding it out just to finish it.
Also, Anna Paquin's character was annoying.

Damn shame she didn't really show us the goods.

Trashy fun w/a ton of side characters who carry the show more often than the leads is a good way to describe it. I probably would have watched a series just about Lafayette and Deputy/Sheriff Andy TBH.
The biggest issue I had w/the show is it would constantly build up each season's big bad as some sort of crazy arse unstoppable force only for them to get taken out in surprisingly quick and easy ways that were wholly unsatisfying.

Absolutely this. Spot on. So many good and yawn characters and story arcs. I'd have to say Eric & Pam were among my favorites. The world building from the 1st moment was fantastic.
Not the best ending, but it didn't wreck it for me. It was just time.

I think I laughed out loud maybe 3 times during the entire series and I think they were all from Jason and his malapropisms- "I'm just parrot-phrasing" for paraphrasing , using "dog muck" for dogma, and "laid person" for lay person. Lafayette and Pam usually kept a smile going though

It is a fun show to watch. Ive watched it a few times. Debra Wolf gets all the attention but that show was absolutely full of hot arse women and so many more hot than her.
If I remember well, I did a "Ladies of True Blood" post on here years ago with lots of photos and info.
We should take a second to admire how amazing Lizzy Caplan looked in True Blood. It was her best that she has looked in her career.

So much camp & sexiness. Great show! Love me some Pam sassiness.

First few seasons were a TON of fun. Like I wanna say 2008/2009. I think the third season was where it dropped a tad and then by the end was a damn joke with the little picnic dinner finish.

Definitely a fun show. First season was awesome.
Lots of good looking women. Agreed on the Lizzie Caplan post. Jason got to bone a lot of smoking women. Specifically; Caplan, the preachers wife, his waitress hookup from season 1, I'm pretty sure he boned Debra Ann, his vampire girlfriend in the later seasons was a dime, and the blonde he stole from his best friend in the last season.
One of the goat opening songs too. It really does draw you into watching it.

I looked up baby vamp Jessica/Deborah Ann Woll the other day to see what else she’d been in. Was shocked to see she’s 40. Time flies.
Anna Camp was fine as hell in that show. She is now dating a not very attractive woman.
I see that the Vampire Bill actor has continued to work, but it’s not been in anything I watched. A bit surprising after how big a splash he made in the role.

It is amazing how funny and cool gay parts in these shows could be before it got stuffed down our throats 24/7.
If you have ever watched Banshee, and you should if you have not, Job was absolutely one of the best characters on that show. And honestly, I dont even know what he was. LOL. Gay? Cross dresser? Drag? Maybe a combo of all those.
"Dude" was straight up funny

She absolutely was. Her and Wolf were two of the few who did not get naked...
