Jay said he's going to follow this template for future teams...

Meaning stout defense and pitching.
I loved gorilla ball back in the day, but there's no substitute for watching the defense this year's team rolled out game after game. I used to tense up on hard hit grounders, but this team made everything look routine.
A friend who is an LSU fan but didn't watch much of the season until Omaha asked why we didn't have anyone better than Braswell in the lineup. After watching him make plays for a week, he understood.

100%....that UGA model surely doesn't work.....slugged their way to nowhere.

Its probably the best strategy specifically for Omaha.
It gives you much more consistent results across the board, too.

Doesn't mean his teams won't be able to mash nor hit bombs, I think that just means that priority will be given to defense. Which is probably wise in general unless the bat is too good to sit

Good pitching beats good hitting 8-9 times out of 10.

If that’s the case, I would like to see Jay make some adjustments in how at least some of the batters work at the plate. Maybe shorten up swings for the guys who aren’t power hitters, especially with 2 strikes. Play for more line drives and singles in gaps than big swings to the wall and over. We had some long dry spells in games this season with guys constantly making big cuts and either popping or striking out.
The biggest weakness on this team once the bullpen pulled together was how streaky the hitting could be. It feels like there’s some room to just make solid contact for men on if we are focusing on defense more than power hitting.

I think the balls were less juiced this year, which lead to less homeruns across the NCAA. 2 years ago it seemed like every top 25 team had a guy hitting .350+ with 20 HR. There were several players at P5 schools hitting .400 with power. That wasn’t a thing this year, and it played to our advantage.

Worked out great because if you relied a bunch on the long ball and ran into this big park/big wind championship series, you would have been screwed. Need to be versatile with how you manufacture runs

Did you watch the CWS? Because thats exactly what we did
3/8 w/ RISP and 5/15 w/ 2 outs is pretty damn good.
We held Coast to 0/9 Saturday night.

100%. Pitching and defense also travels better than gorilla ball. Slugging can be adversely affected by variables beyond control (wind, ballpark design, etc).
Makes sense to control what you can control.

Their HR #'s are so misleading due to the little league size field they play on.

What can’t he recruit both?
Posted on 6/23/25 at 2:03 pm to clamdip
As long as he doesn’t go the extreme as. Paul Maneri Did sacrificing offense for defense

People forget, but that is how Bertman was originally, but then he was forced to adapt to Gorilla Ball....which of course he did successfully

Considering Jay’s area of true expertise is offense, I think him building his teams around pitching and defense will end up being some really good, balanced teams.
He’s always going to have guys who can hit. It’s in his DNA

There is no reason you cannot have some power hitting in the mix with the above formula.
They had it this year. This team quietly hit over 100 homers. They were just inconsistent with the power.
