The were both unfortunate consequences to Japan's war of conquest in the preceding years going back to the late 30s in China.

Same thing
Atomic bombs were dropped on cities made of wood and paper. Talk about fueling a fire, the cities were built for it. In Europe you see bricks / masonry still standing but in Japan it is just ash.

Atomic bombs were dropped on Japan only as a show of force to prove had them to Stalin and for us to actually see what they would do in real time use, not as a strategic weapon against the Japanese.

Yes and No
Did not help you had a culture where the leader was a God, caught up with Egypt with the Pharaoh till Moses and those pesky slaves took a powder with the help of the God above.
Did not help that Germany and Japan had no oil in an industrialized era was switching from coal to oil. Churchill knew oil navies went faster than coal navies. Europe had Middle East concession (through BP and such) and Merica had Standard Oil.
The issue was less the Emperor and that war group that was the real power behind the throne. Without them Japan may never have gone to war.
NO = Emperor
YES = Generals
NO = People

This is almost 100% spot on. You forgot about Truman's bloodlust.

The descriptions from the fire bombing in "Supernova in the East" are horrific.

Most definitely not the same thing. Firebombing with incendiaries was much more devastating and deadly.

Hard lesson to those in wooden houses not to ambush a juggernaut with a formidable Navy, long-range bombers, and incendiaries.

True. If LeMay's firebombing did not bring them to the table, nothing else was going to other than a - for the time - history changing event.

You may be arguing quantity instead of quantity
1 Atomic Bomb dropped on a city made of paper and wood.
VS
???? Fire Bomb(s) dropped on a city made of paper and wood.
Unlike firebombs, atomic bombs (radiation) probably kills more humans and more slowly over time. Fire is quick, radiation is not. You rebuild quickly on fire earth, not so fast on radiated earth.
Your thoughts on this point?

Dresden.... worst firebombing of all time. WW2.

There were also considerations due to atom bomb placement, at least in Nagasaki. Direct blast area was about 40% smaller than Hiroshima, I think because the bomb drifted towards the mountains a bit more than expected.
But, firebombing "direct" impact area was approx 16 square miles in Tokyo, versus 5 miles for Hiroshima, 3 for Nagasaki. That's what one bomber versus a lot tends to do.

I dont think I've ever seen a country change its ways as much as Japan. Those old imperial Japanese would cut heads off with Samurai swords and committed all kinds of atrocities.
Now Japan is a close ally and maybe the most civilized country.
