Question on Delayed Double Steal

I'm rusty on some of the fine points of the game and have a question about the attempted Delayed Double Steal (had to look it up to make sure I had the terminology correct).
It appears to me that if Brown had not slipped, LSU would probably have scored a run before recording the 3rd out.
It seems that if executed properly, the team on base has a high chance of scoring. Knowing that, why even make the throw to 2nd? Wouldn't it be better to concede 2nd instead of giving up a run?
Thanks in advance for the education.

It's just Jay's way of making the defense execute perfectly to get the last out. Brown doesn't slip and we score there. Or they let us take second. We take either outcome.

That play tells you how little faith they had in dickinson. I honestly cant understand why hes playing when hes clearly injured.

Yes. That’s what most teams would have done but we were playing DVH

Braswell and Dickinson (although Dickison had a Baltimore chop that turned into a double). have been black holes in our offense.

Many times it may just be a straight steal so teams will throw down for the final out. The guy covering 2nd has to make the call as to whether he’s going to pursue the runner from 1st or worry about the guy from 3rd. Kozeal decided right away to pursue Brown and got lucky he slipped.

Tanner Reaves is the only other person on the roster that has played middle infield this season. Give me injured Dickinson 100% of the time.

Im not certain reeves isnt a better option now. Dickinsons defense has been shaky all series too. The injury has clearly taken away his ability to swing normally.

Because he’s better than the replacement and he had a big hit the other day. Don’t care if it was a bloop, but he still plays great defense (yes, he had a hiccup last night).

No one thought Arky was going to throw to 2nd. It caught Jake off guard. Thats why he slipped. Jay was trying to steal a base
Otherwise we dont delay at 3rd. Pearson would have been across the plate by the time they ran Jake down. They chased Jake because Pearson never made a break until after Jake got caught in a pickle

What is Dickinson’s injury? I must have missed that.

Ehh I’m pretty sure we’ve done that exact thing with Brown 2-3 other times this year. It was designed to get a throw, not simply to steal 2nd.

Some do concede it

I assume they were trying to execute a 1st third play. The intent is for the runner to take his secondary and then steal with the intention of getting caught in a rundown. As soon as the catcher throws the ball to get the runner, 3rd base is supposed to take off for home and the runner taking second should stop. It forces the defense to either get the runner prior to guy taking home or thrown down to the catcher for a tag.

You can argue it was shaky last night, maybe.
He’s been great in the field. Turned two huge DPs from Braswell against arky game 1 too

“I’m not certain?” Above you wrote that you can’t understand why he’s still playing. Seems like you were certain.

He wasn't trying to steal. He was trying to execute that EXACT play. Had he been trying to steal he would have been busting much harder and slid.

Until Jay give an explanation here is my feelings on it
Number 1, a delay steal was on and Brown realized he was gonna get thrown out and tried to stop and change directions and get into run down to try and get runner at 3 third home. When he slipped a little trying to retreat it gave The defender enough time to tag him before runner scored.
Number 2 many were speculating that Jay wanted a walk off type play except that the catcher would throw it versus the pitcher stepping off and executing the technique of a defending a walk off steal.
If thats the case, getting the longer throw and timing the steal home I get only except Jake slipped and the runner didn't break for home on the catchers throw right away
I think first one was what happened.

I believe he would have. He had too much momentum running towards 2nd base to stop and turn back towards 1st base quickly. Otherwise, he would not have been caught before the run scored.
