My son is getting in to bass fishing. He saved up and got him a new reel. Wanted to take him to fish tomorrow. Any recommendations of places to go on the lsu lakes for some good practice and maybe some results? Or anywhere else in the area to do some fishing off the bank. Thanks

The LSU lakes took a major hit to the fish population during the drought. The larger one dried up to the point you could walk across it on dry land. The smaller one by the dorms had good fish up until about 2 weeks ago. The dredging killed a lot of the large bass, not sure how many are left

I'm sure there are plans to restock the lakes after the current dredging project. There for a while people were catching huge bass from City Park Lake.

If you want to make the drive to plaquemine, or hop the ferry, you could take him to the Bayou Plaquemine boat launch. It’s the one across the bayou road from the iberville parish jail. Throw a shallow diving/square bill crankbait along the rocks under the bridge. Pitch a soft plastic by the culvert on the other side of the bridge. There’s some bass to be caught around there.

Eh. The Waddill ponds are "stocked" but they are very small. I fish there regularly with my 4 year old nephew because he can catch a bunch of bream, but they are all fingerlings - he at least catches stuff and gets excited.
For bass fishing it very lackluster. And their catfish pond supposedly have catfish, but I have never once seen anyone take a catfish out of there.

How old is the OP's kid? Maybe he's young and just wants to catch some fish.
He's not going to catch a trophy bass out of Waddill, but at least he'll catch something.

Hilltop Arboretum off highland road has a pond. Caught bass and brim in it. Caught bass on crank baits, Texas rigs, and frogs and brim on worms and a few tiny plastic baits. Never anyone out there fishing when I went either

They built a nice pier on bayou manchac in Bayou Manchac Park. You can take him on a nice hiking trail too. Spots to stop and fish the bank along the way.
Google Maps.

and a new kayak launch
BREC has really improved this park a lot in the past few years. I wish they'd build another kayak launch either at the Airline Hwy Fair Grounds or farther down the river closer to Fred's/Amite River.

Just try not to catch any stray handjobs on the way past the restroom.

That's in the works. They're supposed to build a nice launch at the Fairgrounds.

How far up machac from there can one go? Looks like it turns swampy after you go under i10 then splits into Fountain and alligator bayou.

Manchac starts turning into a ditch not far past that split. Bayou Fountain can be navigated all the way to Highland Road Park kayak launch and beyond. almost to behind Sammy's Grill on Highland.
