Former UFC Fighter, Olympic Wrestler Ben Askren in very bad health right now

By most accounts, Askren is a very nice guy. His situation however does not sound good at all. One fighter even thought he passed away earlier today.
He was hospitalized a few days ago due to very bad staph infection and now he may need a lung transplant if he survives.
Chael Sonnen put out an update today.

Wonder how it got so bad. I caught MRSA about 3.5 years ago. Not sure if I got it from jits or a couple rounds of corticosteroid shots for an inflamed bursa sac (or both). The doctors didn't seem especially worried about it, and it didn't cause me much trouble outside of inner thigh pain where the staph sore was. I did have to be treated by an infectious disease specialist for it though.

Hope Ben recovers. Seems like a great dude

He most likely neglected it for a little too long. For the amount of time he spends in a gym setting, people need to always pay attention to anything going on with your skin.

Ben is a Mizzou legend. Greatest wrestler in our history. Prayers to him and his family. Cant fathom someone as tough as him going out like this.

2 time National Champion at Mizzou, one of 2 wrestlers to ever win the Dan Hodge Trophy twice. Hope he pulls through.

I remember when Kevin Randleman had a giant hole on his side from staph.
This was years before his actual death.
A guy I knew on the wrestling team in high school got herpes gladitorium from dirty headgear.

Apparently his insurance doesn’t want to cover his lung transplant

Can he not afford it? I thought he got a huge payday for getting knocked out by Jake Paul

“I don’t want people to think that Ben was this fighter who made this money and has blown it… the money that this guy’s made is like tied up, invested back into the sport… it’s in his businesses, it’s in his building, it’s in the former wrestlers he’s hiring,” Bader explained.

Ben has done well but to have prob in the range of 1-2 mill cash I don’t think he has made that type of money. Hopefully the community will band together along with the ufc and other orgs to make sure he and his family has the money to take care of this. He is a great dude and has entertained many people over the years with his fights and commentary.

Imagine you’re an average dude doing the right thing all your life. Then this happens to you and you’re looking for support from your insurance only to be left out to dry. Now your whole family is fricked forever.

I’m 54, and in good health.
I had severe pneumonia about 9 months ago. 3.5 cups of infected fluid in my right lung. 4 different types of bacteria in the fluid. I couldn’t breathe. Could not get air. Felt like I was drowning. I had to sleep sitting in a chair. The next day at 9 am, I told my wife to cancel my Doctor appointment, but she insisted on taking me. White cell count was 40,000 (normal is 10,000) and they sent me straight to the hospital. I was septic when I got there. Straight to ICU for 3 days. Chest tube stuck into my side to drain the fluid.
It can happen really, really fast. I’m very lucky to be alive. If I had waited until Monday, I probably would be dead. It would have been too late. And I’m still having a lot of complications.

Ben’s a Demi-god at MU, a true legend, and wrestling in the youth ranks and at the high school level in Missouri is off the charts. Praying for you Tiger.
Mark Bader was a teammate at MU and gives an up to the minute recap, as I had absolutely no clue this was even taking place. The health emergency first occurred back on May 30th in Vegas and went south incredibly fast. As of 6/23/25 he was conscious, but still vented, and the situation is still precarious. Seems as if the Ins. company is fricking the Askren family for the cost of the transplant, but the hospital in Wisconsin has facilitated the coverage of the transplant through a non-profit that will specifically cover the medical cost, but can only imagine at what a young mother and wife is staring at. He’s officially on the transplant list and at the top due to age, existing health, and severity of situation. Beginning of cast gives back story, of pertinent points were at 13:20 & 25:00 minute marks.

Even with a double lung transplant its gonna be a massive uphill battle. It's an incredibly rough recovery and the transplant with highest risk of rejection. My dad had a double lung transplant and lived an additional 8 years after the transplant before he got covid which triggered rejection. He passed about six months later

Jake Paul, along with his brother Logan, has pledged to pay for Ben's transplant bill.
