Mel Brooks, who created and directed the original film, will reprise his role as Yogurt and return as a producer. The sequel is being described as a "Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film". Josh Gad is set to star and co-write the script with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Josh Greenbaum is directing.

I am on the fence about this, but cautiously optimistic as long as Mel Brooks is heavily involved (and it seems like he may be). I won't expect much from it, and my bar will be low. But I'm all for Mel Brooks-type silliness in another Spaceballs movie.

And he looks outstanding for being almost 100 years old.

ETA: And Moranis coming out of retirement for this is huge news.

Ehhh. John Candy is dead and Bill Pullman is old. Would Rick Moranis even do this?

I mean I love Spaceballs and use the quotes and memes off it a lot. This seems like a bad idea. This movie should have been made 35 years ago.

ETA: just saw the post about RM and BP. So Darth Helmet will be under Lone Star command?? Lone Star is now President Scroob?

They should just continuously mock remakes the whole movie. I could see Mel Brooks making that funny

He'll be 100 when this movie comes out. I can't imagine that he will be heavily involved. My only hope is that he wrote the script for the sequel not long after the original, and that the show runners do a good job keeping the feel of the first one.

Good to see Pullman back but why wouldn't he be playing Lone Star?

Taking Mel Brooks' role so that he can give a comedic version of his speech from Independence Day.

There’s been a poor track record of long overdue sequels. Just like Coming 2 America, if it sucks then I’ll quickly forget about it and not let it affect the original.

Mel Brooks looks amazing for 98

I can see this working if it's not too cynical, but still clever enough to point out the absurdities that major franchises, especially SW, commit to to stay relevant.

I can see them mocking an idea of introducing new characters that have these really deep backstories that everyone, except for one character and the audience knows about. Probably some 4th wall break about never seeing the spinoff series nor having the streaming services it's on.

Or have the villan be private equity haha

I'll be disappointed if the title doesn't have "the search for more money" somewhere in it.

I'm always blown away when I see people say stuff like this about all this sequels that have come out over recent years.

This is going to suck. You know it will, deep down.

Legend Mel Brooks is nearing 100. Didn’t hear anything positive about History of the World Pt 2, so I’m crossing fingers for this one.

Top Gun: Maverick

What you need is the formula from that- the original creative team, with enough of the original cast for fans to reconnect, and true to the original spirit of the first movie.
First and foremost, this needs to be a Mel Brooks movie, which means farcical comedy with crude, politically incorrect jokes. Jokes that offend anyone who takes themselves too seriously.

I don't know if even Mel Brooks has the juice to get that done in this climate. I hope he does, but we all know most of his films would be protested today.
