I think he pretty much made it because people hate watch him.
One of his first major controversies was saying that he had sources that Troy Aikman was a closeted homosexual.
And this was in the mid 90s when the sports media did not go after these types of stories even when there was a lot of smoke about off the field rumors.

I liked it when they went to Vegas to do their show. Skip would be sitting there waiting, looking all spiffy and woody would come stumbling in at the last second, looking like he had been at the tables all night.
