A person erecting a roadside memorial within a public right of way should be charged with littering and have the memorial removed.

A person dying does not confer land ownership to their family members.

I never understood it to be honest.

You want to remember the best times from a person. Not "where" they expired.

I agree. But leave it up for 1 year. Then that’s it.

Seen one on Highland Road that’s been there for at least 10 years. If I owned that land they would have 1 year and then it’s gone.

When trolling for down votes, a little subtlety goes a long way.

How is it different than littering?

Agreed, and it's trashy. I don't need a memorial where I bled out. Hell, who needs a memorial at all other than the human ego?

Let them grieve. It's not that big of a deal compared to what the family is dealing with.

Is it on YOUR property?

Is it in your way?

Why care how others grieve/memorialize a loved one?

There's one around here that is a permanent road sign and uses the unfortunate passing of the young man as a good reminder to slow down around that curve.

There's another with an engraved wooden cross across the elementary school for a 2nd or 3rd grade child died crossing the road trying to get to (ironically was mowed down by a teacher at that school).

These signs remind me that life is precious and quickly lost. Sobering and uncomfortable, but I'm thankful every time I pass them that their pain isn't my own- though I do contemplate it and share in it for a mile or two.

I agree, none are built really all that well, no designer or architect has been used, it's just usually what the family living spouse or kids throw together, often with cheap matewrials. They do not look good at all. Take them down, if you want something nice, go to the city gvt and ask for a statue to be built.

It is public property, owned by all.

Littering is illegal.

Can I erect a memorial to my pet who was hit by a car?

I think you leave it for a year and remove it on the anniversary of their passing. I have no problem with that.

To be honest, that's all I've ever seen.

If some people go overboard with it, I can understand the OP's sentiment.

I’m all for giving people 2-3 weeks to put up whatever. It’s the grieving process and I’m not going through it, so I don’t want to tell them no. But the ones that are permanent and are there longer than a month max….yeah, take them down with no shame.

Roadside memorials are bad. So are decals on rear windows and Adopt-A-Highway signs.

So you knew and loved someone who died. Big deal! Who hasn't? Buy a headstone and move on.

Yes, I'm sure City Hall will get right on it.
