NEW YORK (AP) — Sly Stone, the revolutionary musician and dynamic showman whose Sly and the Family Stone transformed popular music in the 1960s and ’70s and beyond with such hits as “Everyday People,” “Stand!” and “Family Affair,” has died. He was 82

Stone, born Sylvester Stewart, had been in poor health in recent years. His publicist Carleen Donovan said Monday that Stone died surrounded by family after contending with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other ailments

Wasn't a huge fan of his band but loved his daughter in Basic Instinct and Casino.

Sly was the ultimate "cool cat," and did not have a racist bone in his body. His band was integrated. He had songs that dealt with the fact that everyone can be subject to racial dislike ("Every Day People"). If you listen to a Best of Sly and the Family Stone album, you'll go "I didn't know that was their song" to several of the cuts.

I'm friends with Jerry Martini, the sax player. He had a great funk band called Rubicon that had several future members of Night Ranger playing. Jerry's in his 80's so we don't email each other very much any more.

Jerry can tell some wild stories.

I became a fan a few years ago when I learned this.

Saw footage of Sly and the Family Stone at a concert put on in a community’s park, in a documentary, and went down a rabbit hole learning about him and the band.

Sly is very fortunate that he lived into old age despite his actions to cut his life short back in the early 70's.
