Greek Island Before Cruise from Athens

We are in the process of booking a cruise that leaves from Athens. We would like to get there early and spend a few days on an island that is easily accessible to and from Athens by ferry.
The two most attractive islands in close proximity to Athens seem to be Hydra and Aegina.
Does anyone have any experience with Hydra or Aegina or any other island I should consider?
Thanks.

Hydra may be a little small for more than a day or two. Aegina is nice, Spetses is also close by and maybe take a look at Syros as well, it's a little further away but worth thinking about.
Where all is on the cruise itinerary?

Thanks.
Those look like two great suggestions.
The cruise starts in Athens and goes to Santorini, Olympia and Corfu in Greece, then goes up the Adriatic to Kotor, Dubrovnik, Zadar, and Koper then ends in Venice.
I know there is not a lot to do in Hydra to occupy us for more than a couple of days, but we will only be there for about 2 1/2 days. It does look like a beautiful place.
So does Aegina. Aegina is bigger and there is more to do, but it does look a little more touristy.
Right now the plan is to fly in to Athens on a Wednesday morning, ride the hour or so to the port and catch a ferry to our island.
On Saturday morning we will take the ferry back to the Athens port to board our ship.

One of the nice thing in Hydra is that there are no cars on the island which definitely gives it a way different feel. Aegina is busier than Hydra but most of the visitors there will be Athenians on vacation, many of them with homes there.
All of the Saronic islands are easy to get to from Piraeus.
I will go on record right now and predict that you will really like Corfu.

Check out Andros. 2 hour ish ferry from the Athens port near the airport. Gorgeous, lush island

How about Delos? We are taking a ferry over from Mykonos when we get there. You’ll love Dubrovnik. Fantastic place. We are a few days into our cruise. Been to:
Dubrovnik
Kotor
Gallipoli
Sarande (not a fan)
Zakinthos
Sea day today then:
Nafplion
Piraeus
Gythion
Chania
Mykonos
Cesme
Kusadasi
Istanbul
Nvm. Wasn’t looking at a map. Mykonos/Delos not exactly close by

You can fly to Paros. My favorite island. It’s like 45 minute flight from Athens.

You also can't stay in Delos, the whole island is a museum.
Found Sarande to be a bit dirty?

Kotor, Dubrovnik
When we came in on ours, a storm hit so Kotor wasn't nearly as stunning as its supposed to be
Then said storm completely canned our Dubrovnik port. So trying to find a way to go back sometime in the future

I'm actually on Hydra now on a cruise. It's quaint. I only saw the town part but it was cute. It has an Italian look and feel. No cars as mentioned so you get around by foot, donkey, or water taxi. I realize I didn't see other parts, but based on what I did see, I don't think I would do more than a day trip here. Maybe one night. Probably has a better feel without cruisers like me here.
Btw, your upcoming cruise sounds amazing. Which cruise line?

I just got back from Corfu not too long ago, lovely island.
Curious why you said this though (I’m not OP)?
Anyway, I can also highly recommend the small neighboring island of Paxos (not to be confused with Paros, which neighbors Naxos in the Aegean Sea) - absolute gem of an island, I think I even preferred it to Naxos & Milos, which I also loved.

I really don’t like Corfu. But, and I say this with all due respect, I’m going to need you to shut the frick up about Paxos. I’ve been gate keeping that place for years.

Absolutely. Seems they try to keep the main strip along the water clean, but go a few blocks up and it’s sketchy/dirty

Wow
You will be able to write the Greece guidebook when you get back. It sounds like you have them all covered. Have a great trip.

We are taking the Viking Empires of the Mediterranean cruise.
If you have seen Hydra’s town and harbor I think you have seen about everything there is to see.
The scenery looks beautiful and it is convenient to Athens. That is why Hydra and Aegina were on the top of our list.
Lots of great suggestions on here though.

The theatre was kind of interesting but not much to it other than that.
It did give me the opportunity to check off Albania.

Because I really liked it - part of what interested me was how green it is in contrast with the Aegean islands and the English and Venetian influence makes it sort of unique. Great place to spend a few days.
Oh and the patistada is really good too.

That's the thing. With a decent connection time, you can fly to a number of Greek islands faster than ferrying to them. And the flight is unlikely to be expensive. Pick out an island.
What interests you? Some islands have dramatic hiking, others have medieval monasteries or ancient ruins, while others feature cute towns or beautiful beaches.

Naxos is a great island. I think it’s about 3.5ish each way on seajets. Loved my time there. 45 min flight and about 100$ round trip. I’d prob fly it with your time frame.
