Veteran QB Derek Carr said he decided to pass up his $30M salary and retire because he didn’t want to ‘take the Saints money.’

Carr, 34, said he didn’t want to do the Saints wrong by undergoing shoulder surgery and collecting his pay check while sitting on the sideline:

“That part was tough because I didn’t want to have surgery and just sit there and—it sounds crazy but—just take the Saints money,” Carr said.

“I wouldn’t have been able to play if I had the surgery. And then if I tried to play with it, I wasn’t near 100%, and so that doesn’t help them, either. I just felt like it was the right thing to do for myself and for the team.”

Carr said the Saints wanted him to try to keep playing, but he couldn’t commit to another season, despite the financial benefit.

“I never played just for the money. I had a whole bunch of people tell me how crazy I was, and ‘Man, I would never have done that.’ That’s all cool, but I’ve gained all these things that the world has to offer, and it doesn’t really do anything for your heart. I knew my heart was at peace, and that’s really all that mattered.”

Say what you want about Carrs play on the field but he’s a Christian first and he’s never denied that and I can 100% see him making that decision exactly as he said.

Most worldly people can’t grasp that kind of faith but it 100% exists and I don’t know him personally but I can say I believe him because I feel the same way about money. I’ve passed up great deals when it wasn’t right with my faith (never that much ) but that doesn’t matter because it’s only money. When you don’t live for money it’s amazing how you always seem to have enough.

Bruh. That’s much easier to do when you have lifetime earnings over 300,000,000. Let’s not act like this is some good boy shite. He doesn’t strike me as the type to have spent it all on lambos. I’m sure he invested enough for his kids kids kids kids kids to be set for life. He didn’t sacrifice shite.

ETA: 196M lifetime earnings

This is what I mean about worldly people who live for money.

You come across as bitter and jealous. Likely from your fixation on money.

I’m sure there is more to it, but the overall truth doesn’t change. I respect that he didn’t just take the money in bad faith. That takes honor and honesty and frankly a side of him that wasn’t too apparent (albeit from the outside looking in) as a QB and leader. Respect.

Not buying any of this shite. Of course it is derek’s personality to make himself appear so selfless and noble. We already know he only plays the fake arse Christian card but his behavior told a different tale.

Saints were going to get that money from him otherwise.

The things I would do for the money he gave up ... you can hate him and question why he did it, but mad respect for doing it. I know I surely wouldn't have

I tend to agree.

But, to be honest, so what? If the two parties got together and crafted this narrative and the end result was that the franchise saved 30M...I'll accept this as truth.

It's a clean, tidy solution.

Of course not. It likely would’ve got more contentious. But it’s helping us out cap wise and it gives a guy worth well over 9 figures a great PR position if he’s going into ministry/youtube channel thing as this wholesome guy in the Central Valley.

It’s mutually beneficial for all parties moving forward and with his career earnings I’m sure pursuing his interests at 35 years old probably outweighs more money added to his generational wealth portfolio.

throwing shade at nfl reporters in the middle of a church service. nothing publicly congratulatory to the new coaching staff and changes made to the organization. rumors of him wanting pay raises. his play speaks for itself bullshite. yelling at teammates. being a general douche of a leader. Him coming here and asked for taysom to not take any of his qb snaps, moved him out the qb room. few items off top of my head.

Not for a minute do I believe this. Mickey knows the truth. This was going to arbitration or court, and his little ego couldnt stand being raked over the coals on social media. He suks-go back to Fresno!

Yes. This is the exact reason for this.

No, this has nothing to do with it. It has everything to do with the nature of the injury in question not being football related and not being communicated to the team in a timely and honest manner, which would lead to arbitration (not court) which could go either way, making a settlement the best option for both sides.

Yeah. From what I understand, Saints agreed to let him keep the roster bonus and agreed not to attempt to claw back any of his original signing bonus if he agreed to retire post June 1. He did not want to play here and was not going to abide by Saints requirements regarding the "injury."

I agree with your post but I just don't see Carr as that guy. He had representatives talk to other teams right before retirement, he made a lame arse video in front of a Rolls Royce weeks before announcement, reports he told the team he wanted to be traded...They were gonna take him to court and he settled to save face. That's what I believe happened here.
