The New York Knicks are relieving Tom Thibodeau of his duties as head coach, sources tell ESPN. Thibodeau led the Knicks to their first East Finals in 25 years, made playoffs in 4 of 5 years and led Knicks to consecutive 50+ win seasons for first time since the 1990s.

And the Pels still have Willie...make it make sense!!

Some organizations really really want to win

Some do not

The only way that I can make sense of the firing is if the Knicks are about to trade for a superstar who doesn't want to play for Thibs.

Otherwise, that team is going downhill next season.

So all the other 28 teams that didn't make the Finals should fire their coaches too, right? Is that the point of this thread?

What do you think Willie Green’s record would’ve been with the Knicks roster?

It’s not exactly apples to apples here. Our best player is a bum. The Knicks arguably have 6 better and more reliable players than our best one.

Some coaches get fired, Some do not get fired.

Also, the NBA is becoming more and more like European soccer, where any coach who doesn't win the league gets fired every year, and firing the coach every year is almost expected. It's ridiculous.

Well Gayle did t get the memo. Our coaches don’t make the post season and then get secret extensions.

I asked ChatGTP to give me the average tenure of coaches in the last 20 years in the three main sports:

MLB - 3.8 years

NFL - 3.6 years

NBA - 2.3 years

If you get hired as an NBA head coach, you really shouldn't expect to keep the job for long.

Is that seriously the mean rather than the median tenure length?

Wouldn’t Eric Spoelstra and Gregg Popovich skew the NBA coaching year average? Are the other 28 NBA teams all averaging a coach per year or something?

In last 20 seasons, the Nets have had 14 head coaches. The Kings have had 12. The Pistons, Bucks, and Timberwolves have each had 10. The Grizzlies have had 9. Even with Phil Jackson there through the 2010-11 season, the Lakers have had 9.

So, yeah, lots of teams go through coaches like bathwater: use 'em, and dump 'em down the drain.

I don't know for sure that the Knicks are going to get KD, but I can definitely believe that he would want to go back to NYC

More reliable, absolutely. Better? GTFO.
