What do you recommend for a travel backpack? I’ll use it for traveling (planes, trains, and automobiles) and hiking. Hikes are not going to be anything crazy.

I've had the Osprey 40L for several years and had used it for 3 week trips to Europe 6 or 7 times and would highly recommend it.

I’ve been looking at the Osprey but I wasn’t sure if it was really worth the money m.

I've had the Farpoint 55 for 12 years. Some things aren't in quite the same shape as it used to be but still going. I liked the separate daypack for going around places during my trips.

I believed they redesigned it because the original main 40L pack was dimensionally too long for some airlines but I was never stopped for it and overhead always closed, but they decided to remove that as an issue and shortened it up a little.

Looks like Ospreys are on "sale" on Amazon but check to see if a better deal is out there.

Buy once, cry once. It’ll last a long time.

I've had my Boyt Edge 21" Backpack for years now without any issues. Other than the dirt stains it still looks new.

another vote for osprey
I have a daylite day pack and one that’s a little bigger that has a waist belt, they both fly no problem as a “personal item” (fits under the seat). For dual purpose including hiking I prefer the waist belt pack it’s more comfortable

buy osprey with confidence. The day pack is close to 20 years old now and no damage or other issues

We use the Cotopaxi Allpa's for the family. I like the built in pockets. It splits open like a suitcase for organizing stuff.

But they just came out with a new one that has a separate zipper compartment up top that comes off and qualifies as a personal item bag.

The Backpack Islanders Savvy from Veria Travel is the best travel backpack I have ever used or owned but definitely not good for hiking.

You didn't really say what size or is this your main carry on or not?

Either way, I always use the TRIPPED Packing cubes, which are wonderful for organizing your luggage, and they can help you save space too.

Primary Carry On Backpack:

Two of the top brands, Cotopaxi and Oprey, have already been mentioned. Function of if the style and price point works or not for you. (Note: I've bought used luggage on Facebook Market Place and eBay at a fraction of the retail prices. Works just fine if you locate a reputable seller!)

Also consider:

tomtoc Travel Backpack 40L

Or the Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L.

Good Hybrid Choices for My 2nd Bag:

I use 2 based upon the trip.

I have the Osprey Daylite 26+6.

I like this small pack knapsack a lot. It’s compact but has the ability to grow from 26L-32L. The main compartment is roomy and easy to pack.

Alternatively, for our European Trip, I've tended to take my Travelpro Maxlite 5 + the Osprey Transporter Various Sizes. I have the Osprey Transporter 36L Travel Pack.

Review

Clam shell design. This is targeted at plane travelers who want to bring a large(-ish) backpack instead of a rolling carry-on or weekend bag. Or in my case, both. Can fit under a seat if you don't cram it full of stuff. Little larger than the 26+6.

Carhartt 28L, perhaps the 21L, I don't remember. I got mine years ago for about $40. I can tell you I've taken it on every vacation and business trip I've been on for the last 10+ years. And hunting/fishing excursions. It's well built, has padding for a laptop, is comfortable, water proof, multiple little pockets and such for organization.

i have been getting by for years with a 28 liter marmot kompressor star. taken it on long weekends, work trips, and pack it to hike ocassionally.

people carrying 40+ liter packs: do you get shite from flight attendants for trying to put a "backpack" in the overhead bins?

i travel with my pack and no personal item, and put it in the overhead bin (there's always plenty of room for carry ons along with my pack) for extra leg space. but once in a blue moon, i'll get a karen who insists because it is a backpack it needs to go under my seat...usually to accommodate the people with oversized and too many carry ons.

It will not be my main carryon. I will put it under the seat in front of me.

How much do you care about other people looking at your backpack and judging you? On a scale of 0 to a million.

Be honest.
