I know there's a big "SNL hasn't been funny for years" crowd here. Bad news - it's going nowhere.

quote:

Among adults ages 18-49, “SNL” was the No. 1 broadcast series of the 2024-2025 season, excluding sports and news programming, and the No. 1 broadcast or cable comedy for the sixth season running.

quote:

Additionally, “SNL” finds a significant portion of its audience on social media, where Season 50 and the anniversary special reached a total of 7.7 billion views

IMHO it's still not as good as the Hader/Wiig/Sudeikis/Samberg years which was the most recent peak, but slowly getting back there. Cast is still too big. Every episode is good for at least a few good sketches or pre-taped bits, or at least a couple groaners on Weekend Update. And the new guy doing Trump is much funnier than Baldwin's version.

Honest question- was there some kind of debate that SNL may be permanently canceled in the near future?

It can be a shitty show, but still acknowledge that it will likely run forever.

Not to get political, but it's way funnier when Trump is in office. They pull punches against democrat presidents.

Don't care. Haven't watched it in 20 years.

Not seriously, I don't think, but even I was surprised at how well it is still doing from a viewership standpoint.

Exactly. What would they replace it with if it was going away?

I only watched the Walton Goggins episode this season and it was extremely mediocre. But they have clips on X of some skits that are decent.

I agree. The cast is WAY too big. Bowen Yang needs to go. The sassy gay guy schtick is so boring. He's clearly there to check a box, but he does seem to have a bigger following from fans than most other cast members. I just think his brand of comedy sucks.

Jane Wickline is one of the most obvious nepo hires ever. She has zero chops for live sketch comedy. Just terribly unfunny.

The black dude is forgettable.

Sarah Sherman is ok when she's not doing the dumb zany stuff she likes to do.

Chloe Fineman is not great.

Ego is ok, but her bits on Weekend Update suck. The "Ms Eggo" thing is so dumb.

Getting rid of all of the above (maybe keep Sarah) would be a great start. But NBC is too chicken shite to fire the only black woman and gay asian on the cast, at least without replacing them with the same.

That's been a rumor for a long time. Obviously it will happen eventually. He's 80. I could see him doing it another 5 years. He's pretty much said in the past that he will do it as long as he can.

Is there any real competition in this category anymore? Sitcoms are dead and there are a few animated series, but those don't have broad appeal anymore either.

Everything is a reality show now.

All of those shows that are on Max, Hulu, etc. that also air on HBO, FX, etc. are considered cable comedies.

I don't watch it much. Just highlights.

I think it all depends on the host.

She has grown on me. Sarah Sherman is one I like, though she hasn't found a great character yet. She reminds me a bit of Martin Short with her wacky sense of humor and mugging for the camera. Not for everyone.

Semi-hot take: Che and Jost need to go, it's time. Give weekend update to Longfellow. He's got the look and personality for it, and hasn't found a role elsewhere on the show.

50th
Trump

Makes sense to me.

And I don’t watch, mostly because I don’t think about it, not hate. I see clips from time to time.

She’s one of my favorite cast members. Her weekend update bits taking shots at Colin are always good.

So 96% of the 8.1 billion (bold is yours) people on earth watched it?

OK.
