Looking for some recommendations on where to go to target big speckled trout. Fishing around Calliou Bay and Lake Pelto area.

Not really interested in fighting the traffic out at the picketts but more trying to target some larger 3-5 LB trout.

Anyone have any spots that they have had success at in the past? Also what to use for bait? Live Croaker vs Live Shrimp etc..

Thanks!

I don’t have any tips as far as spots to go in that area, but big trout want live croaker more than anything else.

Man I grew up fishing out of Cocodrie and unless times have changed all the big rodeo winning sized trout came from way out east towards Venice. It’s rare to see a trout break 5 lbs fishing terrebonne parish barrier islands. 2-3 lbs were about the biggest we would average fishing live shrimp/ croaker in that area.

Eta: ship shoal lighthouse would produce some hammers from time to time that’s way west damn near south of Morgan city.

Yeah man thats what im afraid of. Location is great for producing numbers but so hard to find big trout. You ever able to slip out to any nearshore rigs with some live croaker and jerk in a donkey?

The Helis platform just south of whiskey pass used to produce some quality fish but I can’t remember catching anything bigger than 3-4 lbs. now it’s been years since I fished that way regular. Also the beach side can produce good numbers when it’s calm enough to fish it.

First try to find a day or weekend when the wind is blowing like a MFr. It was tough last weekend.

Big Trout- 5 plus are very few and far between in Cocodrie area. Bigger Fish in my experience are coming off the well heads couple miles off the beach and just have to wait for that bite. Not going to find numbers. Remember you can only keep 1 over 20"

The wind has been tough as of late and I’ve been tied up not fishing regularly at all.

There were times where I targeted big trout almost exclusively around coco and my personal best was 7 lbs. I have not seen fish that big in 5 years. You’re not going to get on big fish or many fish in bad weather.

Bigger baits= bigger fish

I start transitioning to rigs and deeper water this time of year. Good luck. It ain’t what it used to be.

If you want big trout in that area fish during the winter months. This time of year and through summer enjoy the plentiful catch of smaller trout.

Rocks and deep water are key for big trout. February through May are also the best months to catch a big trout in my experience. Topwater, jerk baits and big soft plastics are what we use to target big trout. Same goes for live bait: big pogies/crokers/shrimp. If using live bait I’m freelining them or using the smallest split shot I can get away with. My biggest in cocodrie area is 6lb 8 oz. To consistently catch larger trout you also have to be stealthy around the structure you are fishing. It’s almost akin to chasing mature whitetail bucks. Now don’t get me wrong anyone can luck into a big fish on occasion but to consistently catch the bigger fish use the advice above. Oh and avoid the weekends like the plague, boat traffic is a killer.

as the saying goes....match the hatch.

What are they eating at that time of the year? usually croaker or mullet.
