20% chance of rain means that 20% of their area will see rain.

quote:

Every meteorologist is responsible for forecasting the weather for a certain area. At Local 24 News, we are responsible for Western Tennessee, Northern Mississippi, and Eastern Arkansas. This means if we know it's going to rain in Oxford but not in Memphis, we would still have to include rain in the forecast.

If we're just expecting a small storm or two, we'd say 20% of the area will see rain. On the other hand, if we're expecting more widespread rain, the area that will see rain would be more like 70% or 80%.

That's the weather forecasters excuse for being wrong. In the Summer, they always have 20% chance to cover their butts.

I sure didn't expect the rain to sit on top of me for - now 7 hrs. -.

You should know by now. Chance of rain on Memorial Day weekend is likely no matter what they say.

I was at St Julien for a 12:30 game and they played in the rain until lightning delay top 2nd. 10U State tourney

I hung around about 2 hours through constant rain and occasional lightning until it was apparent nothing was going to give

90 flooded headed N, Light at Pinhook was out. Rain didn’t stop til Exit 4 in Carencro

Pool play was cancelled and bracket starts at 9:45 tmrw. I would say that’s a very significant weather issue that was completely missed in forecasts

And Reddit users are crying about how Trump's budget cut to Noaa is going to affect weather forecasting.
